Origin

Jubokko (lit. "tree child") is a yōkai that was created by Morihiro Saitō for an article in the November 1966 issue of the magazine Bessatsu Shōjo Friend;[1] this article presented Jubokko as a preexisting folk tale. It would later be popularized by the mangaka Shigeru Mizuki.

人間を襲ってはその血を吸うとされる木の妖怪。「樹木子」と書かれる。

ジュボッコは、人間の血を大量に吸い込んだ樹木が変化してなるといわれる妖怪で、死人の多く出る戦場に生えていた木などがなると考えられていた。

見かけこそ普通の木と変わらないが、その下を人間が通ろうとすると枝を腕のように動かして捕らえ、その血を吸い取って殺してしまう。

多くの死者の血を吸い続けた妖樹。戦場跡に生まれ、通りかかる人を枝で捕まえ血を吸うと言う。

人間の血を大量に吸い込んだ樹木には、やがて魂が宿り、この「樹木子(ジュボッコ)」になると言われている。多くの死者を出した戦場に生えると考えられている樹木で、死者の怨念や魂が木に憑依した存在であると言われる。ジュボッコは、木の下を通る人間を枝で捕まえては血を吸うと言われている。血を吸われた人間の魂は再びジュボッコに吸収され、同化するとされる。
Translation: A mystical tree who sucked up the blood of many dead. Born in the remains of battlefields, it is said to seize people passing by with its branches and suck their blood.

Woods that have absorbed a large quantity of human blood are said to eventually be inhabited by souls, and turn into Jubokko (樹木子). They are woods thought to be born from battlefields where many casualties occurred, and it is said that they are beings whose trees are imbued with the hatred and souls of the dead. It is said that Jubokko seize humans passing under their trees with their branches and suck their blood. It is believed that the souls of humans whose blood was sucked are absorbed by the Jubokko, and assimilated into them.
