Origin

Aerophant (Spanish: Aerofante) comes from Catalonian author Joan Fontcuberta's art series Fauna; the premise of this series is that the works are claimed to be the works of fictitious German zoologist Peter Ameisenhaufen, cataloguing strange animals. The Aerophant itself, an elephant with wings, is said to be a doctored photograph sent by one of Ameisenhaufen's friends as a practical joke.
