History

Atziluth, as it is known in the Digital Devil Story novels and Strange Journey, is believed to be the highest of the four worlds in Jewish esoteric mysticism, also called Kabbalah. Among the worlds depicted in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, Atziluth represents the divine essence and the direct emanation from God, literally meaning "World of Emanation" (Hebrew: עוֹלָם אֲצִילוּת, romanized ʿôlām ʾăṣîlûṯ) in Hebrew. Kabbalah considers Atziluth a plane of absolute oneness with God which transcends human comprehension, while the worlds beneath Atziluth—Beriah, Yetzirah, and Assiah—represent progressively more differentiated and intelligible aspects of creation.

Nomenclature

In most games, Makai is spelled as 魔界, meaning Demon World. In Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine, it is instead spelled as 魔階, meaning Demon Plane. As the kanji 階 commonly denotes a story or floor, it can be understood that 魔階 denotes Makai as another plane of existence as opposed to a world.

That's actually why we use cell phones to summon demons. Essentially, we perform pseudo-summons through computers to transmigrate demons into this world. And that's why accessing the world's digital information via the internet is a piece of cake for demons and angels." Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. Developed by ATLUS.
