Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Revelation is a 1997 role-playing game for the PC-9800 series of home computers by NEC. The game is a spinoff of the Shin Megami Tensei series and is loosely connected to the Shin Megami Tensei: Tokyo Revelation manga. It was developed by Atlus, published by ASCII, and released on April 4, 1997. A remaster of the game was released for Windows on December 22, 1999, featuring updated graphics and 3D-rendered dungeons.

To date, Giten Megami Tensei has not seen an official release outside of Japan. A translation patch for both versions is in development.

Blurb

Synopsis

In the year 19XX the city of Tokyo was devastated by ICBMs launched by Ambassador Thorman in which the city was almost destroyed, but people hid in shelters that were spread throughout Tokyo when the attack happened. The city now infested with demons was ravaged by chaos while the people in the shelters lived peacefully as they were protected by the Devil Busters organization for when demons attacked the shelters.

Ayato Katsuragi lives in Hatsudai Shelter and strives to become a Devil Buster alongside his friend Yuuka Tachibana, his other friends Emi Kirishima, her dog Newton, Tatsuya Hayasaka and Isamu Yamase are also Devil Busters, part of the 2nd Unit led by Yoshio Nishino who is also a father figure to Katsuragi after his parents died prior to the events of the game. After enlisting to the Devil Busters through an exam Katsuragi strives to protect Hatsudai Shelter alongside his friends but one day the shelter is suddenly attacked by Murmur who have previously attacked Harajuku Shelter and other shelters throughout Tokyo. Nishino tasks Isamu to take the citizens out of the shelter to safety while he with Ayato and the others try to defeat Murmur, Murmur who is at the Control Room in the 9th basement floor is waiting for Ayato and his friends but when they arrive one of Ayato’s friends is taken hostage by Murmur who then attacks the Ayato and the rest and they fight him back, but fail to defeat Murmur who then notices that his guests of honor are here, the demons: Ipos, Lamashtu, Asherah, Astarte, Abaddon, Leraje and Decarabia who then proceed to violently dismember Ayato’s friend and eat the body parts except for their head.

Murmur spreads a poison gas in the shelter and flees with the rest of the demons, Ayato and his friends flee and upon leaving they meet a mysterious man who then is revealed to be the demon Dantalion who after a fight leaves, shortly after they’re approached by a truck drove by two men, Tetsuya Sonoda and Kouki Kamikawa who are part of the resistance group called Pentagramma who offer them to join the group and defeat the demon Bael whose been ruling over Tokyo ever since the bombs fell, they accept and join Pentagramma.

Ayato’s journey to save Tokyo begins here and he meets various amounts of people throughout it while looking to revive his lost friend.

  • The game has a resolution of 640×480 pixels instead of 640×400 pixels. Fullscreen images were stretched vertically to fit the new aspect ratio.

A novelized version of the introduction was published TRPG’s LOGOUT for the December 1995 issue. Some of the character names were altered from the novelization to the final release of the game.
