Moon Phases change day by day and affect major story events. At a full moon the party goes through a scripted event against a shadow representing one of the arcana. After the full moon is over a new set of floors in [[Tartarus]] became available. If S.E.E.S. clears those floors they eventually hit a magical barrier that prevents further passage. This barrier only goes away on the next full moon

The Digital Devil Saga games rename the moon phase system the "Solar Noise" system but it works similarly. Various skills rely on the specific phase. The phases impact which items you find in chests. Solar Noise phase affects how much you can sell items for, Max Noise raises prices highest while min is lowest, with the exception of the "Jack Cell" item which is the opposite.

This game introduces Berserk Mode which activates at the full solar noise phase. In this form the characters are only half demon and feel intense hunger and viciousness. They can only use physical or hunt skills. Attacks are far stronger, pierce all phys resistances and have a very high critical rate but defense is significantly weaker so the characters are also more vulnerable. Accuracy is also much lower. Berserk mode nets much higher experience and Atma points.
