Yowie is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
The Whowie is a twenty-foot-long, six-legged reptilian creature with a frog-like head in the folklore of an unspecified group of the Aboriginal Australian peoples. The story was recorded by David Unaipon and originally published in 1930 with authorship falsely credited to W. Ramsay Smith. The Whowie is said to have lived in a deep cave on the Murray River in the Riverina region, and no animal dared go near the riverside due to it. Eventually, various animals worked together to smoke it out of its cave and kill it.[1]
While Unaipon did not specify which people's folklore the Whowie comes from, most of the stories he collected were from his own people, the Ngarrindjeri. This matches the geographical references.[2]
The mis-assignment of the name "Yowie" in the Megami Tensei franchise derives from the Encyclopedia of Things That Never Were, which treats Yowie as a synonym for Whowie.[3] In actuality the Yowie, derived from an entirely separate type of spirit from the Gamilaraay peoples of eastern Australia, is a tribe of giant entities that lived among humanity in the Dreamtime before being driven out after a conflict with humans, though post-colonisation it was re-contextualised as an ape-like cryptid purported to live in the Australian Outback which was popularized by Rex Gilroy in the 1970s. Along with the incorrect name, the Encyclopedia of Things That Never Were is also responsible for the compendium description's inaccurate mention of it being insect-like and eating livestock in the modern day;[3] the book's preface mentions that many of the details in the book are of the authors' own imagination.[4]

A mysterious creature that has the head and body of a monitor lizard and six legs like an insect.
Yowies are said to live within deep, dark caves. Because they are nocturnal, they will never leave from there during the day, but when it gets dark, they will go out to hunt for prey.
Yowies are thought to be carnivorous. It is said that they will come near people's homes to look for livestock. They are said to be responsible for some of the injuries to livestock thought to have been attacked by wild dogs.
