Senko is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
In Chinese folklore, Huxian[a] are beings originated from legends of Xianli and Jiuweihu. They have the ability to fly, turn invisible, absorb qi, and more; much of these abilities are associated with Daoist mysticism.[1] It is from these legends that the Japanese yokai, Senko, likely originated.
The folk tale compilation What the Master Would not Discuss[b] by Qing dynasty author Yuan Mei mentions three tales about Huxian. The first, titled Guangxin Huxian,[c] discusses a trapped Huxian being freed and fed food and water by a woman named Xu Zhiting,[d] after having been trapped by a door guardian for a century. Upon being freed, it warns her not to being her child to a Red Plum Garden[e] on 7th July, for there would be evil spirits that day, and blesses her with a government position in southern Jiangxi. The second story, titled Huxian Kisses[f] tells of a Huxian haunting the Yinxian Temple,[g] where a man named Wang[h] hates and curses its existence. One night, a woman approaches Wang and begins hugging and kissing him, to which he reciprocates. The woman turns out to be the Huxian, turning into a bearded man, before laughing and leaving him with prickles in his lips.[2] The third story, Hú Shēngyuán Quàn Rén Xiūxiān[i] is of a fox immortal who has become a Shengyuan;[j] it converses with Zhao Xiangmin,[k] a governor of Baoming,[l] and explains that foxes are examined by the Lady of Mount Tai: those who pass become Shengyuan and those who fail become wild foxes. Shengyuan are allowed to study the Dao and cultivate immortality while wild foxes are not.[3]
Also written in the Qing dynasty, Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio[m] by Pu Songling[n] also discusses Huxian at-length, depicting them in various forms, typically as shape-shifting entities. One, named Hu Dagu[o] attempts to marry the son of the Yue[p] family in Shandong[q]. Angrily rebuked by his daughter-in-law, Hu strikes the son on the head, killing him, before being captured by the Exorcist Li Chengyao.[r][4]
Design
Senko's design is derived from the traditional nine-tailed fox, which can be ultimately traced back to Jiuweihu from the Classic of Mountains and Seas.[s][5][6]
