Origin

Shōmen Kongō, meaning "blue-faced vajra", is a figure in Kōshin; Kōshin is a Japanese belief system which incorporates elements of Daoism, Buddhism, and Shinto. Shōmen Kongō is commonly associated with the three wise monkeys.

Design

In the artwork made by Kazuma Kaneko for a T-shirt, Seimen Kongou is accompanied by the three wise monkeys: Mizaru (see no evil) is in his right hand, Kikazaru (hear no evil) is in his left hand, and Iwazaru (speak no evil) is on his left shoulder.

Nomenclature

The Japanese name uses a nonstandard reading of the kanji. Shōmen and seimen are both possible Sino-Japanese readings of 青面: shōmen is the go-on (Wu sound) pronunciation, and seimen is the kan-on (Han sound) pronunciation. However, shōmen is the usual pronunciation.
