The Necronomicon, also known as the Book of the Dead, is a fictional grimoire created by American horror author H. P. Lovecraft. Depending on the story, it is either a grimoire for casting spells or making concoctions, a bestiary of ancient deities within the Cthulhu Mythos, and/or a way of summoning the dead. It was first mentioned in The Hound, written by H.P. Lovecraft in 1924.[1]
Within the mythos, it was originally named Kitab al-Azif,[a] it was written by Abdul Alhazred,[b][1] a mad devotee of Cthulhu and Yog-Sothoth, in 730 A.D. during his time in Damascus. The text would be gradually translated into Greek and Latin around 950 A.D., but both were banned by Pope Gregory IX in 1232 due to its unspeakable contents. German black letter, Spanish, and English versions were produced, but only exist in fragments, and are exceedingly rare. The Arabic al-Azif, however, is lost to time.[2] In The Dunwich Horror, a Latin copy from Spain printed in the 17th century was presented to Wilbur Whateley, translated by Olaus Wormius, held in the Library of Miskatonic University of Arkham. He compared it with an English version translated by Dr. Dee, attempting to find a passage about his father, Yog-Sothoth on page 751. It was said that the Latin version contained "such monstrous threats to the peace and sanity of the world" compared to the English version. Whateley would use the two copies to reconstruct an incantation to try to summon the entity. However, Dr. Henry Armitage would thwart further comparisons at different locations, eventually forcing Whateley to try and fail to steal the text for himself. His twin brother was killed by Dr. Armitage using a recipe from the Necronomicon to produce the Powder of Ibn Ghazi.[3] The same Latin copy would be read by Robert Blake in The Haunter of the Dark, among other individuals across the mythos.[4] With respect to the Powder of Ibn Ghazi, the Necrononicon details other concoctions, such as a formula for switching bodies with another person, or even outright possessing them, as seen in The Thing on the Doorstep.[5]
In Call of Cthulhu, it is said that many passages of the Necronomicon have double-meanings, citing a famous couplet that goes as follows:
That is not dead which can eternal lie,
And with strange eons even death may die.
It is implied that those initiated into the Cthulhu Cult would read passages such as this as they so choose, or discuss interpretations at-length. However, these efforts would not lead to Cthulhu's awakening in the story.[6]
As a bestiary, the Necronomicon is said to compile primal myths. The first instance of this, in The Hound, tells of it mentioning a jade amulet tied to a necrophagic cult from Leng, located in Central Asia; studying the text itself, the narrator was disturbed by what was read. A giant hound would proceed to retrieve the amulet that the narrator took.[1] In At the Mountains of Madness includes descriptions of Shoggoths, the spawn of Elder Things.[7] In The Whisperer in Darkness, the Necronomicon is studied by Henry Wentworth Akeley and Albert N. Wilmarth Esq. Here, it is revealed that the Necronomicon details Tsathoggua, a toad-like creature from N'Kai living within the Earth.[8]
Design
Necronomicon appears as a small stereotypical alien UFO with a gargoyle on the very top. It is covered in spinning indentations resembling many technological symbols, such as batteries, a phone, and speakers, that emit neon green light on the sides and neon blue light on the bottom. Also on the bottom are five light blue bulbs protruding that erratically whizz around with a hexagon at their center. It also has up to five alien-like tentacles that it can summon out from the hull.
Gameplay
When Futaba's's Confidant reaches rank 10, Necronomicon evolves into Prometheus.
Futaba is the only party member whose Persona evolutions have different stats; when evolving, her stats adjust to the new Persona's corresponding values for her current level.

Notes
- ↑ Arabic: كِتَاب العَزِيف kitāb al-ʕazīf
- ↑ Arabic texts write the name as Abdullah al-Ḥaẓrad عبدالله الحظرد, though the name is not one of those of Allah, making it anomalous.
