Cthulhu is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
Cthulhu originates from the short story The Call of Cthulhu written by H. P. Lovecraft. In the mythos, Cthulhu is an ancient god and descendant of Azathoth that sleeps deep under the surface of the Southern Pacific Ocean in an underwater city known as R'lyeh. Being the spawn of Azathoth, Cthulhu is related to Nyarlathotep by blood.[1] In Derleth's work, Hastur acts as its rival.
Cthulhu is worshipped by both human cults and monsters known as Deep Ones. One worshipper, Abdul Alhazred,[a] would go on to write the baleful Kitab al-Azif,[b] which later became the Necronomicon.[2] Members of the "Cthulhu Cult" madly produce idols, statuettes, and other regalia of the creature, as well as recite, interpret, and discuss Necronomicon verses, all in attempts to awaken and appeal to it, albeit often in vain.
In the The Call of Cthulhu story itself, Cthulhu is described as a towering humanoid monster with an octopus or squid-like head and face with feelers, a scaly body, large webbed appendages with claws, and long, slender, rudimentary wings. Following an accident involving an idol of Cthulhu at sea, it awakens after having slept in an undersea temple for vigintillions of years. After killing several people and driving another mad, it returns to its resting place, the events only recorded in a document left behind.[3] Most modern depictions in pop culture maintain Cthulhu's traditional appearance from this text.
Design
In all of its appearances, Cthulhu is depicted as a large octopus with red fins on either side of its mantle. The undersides of each tentacle, including the suckers, are also red.
Cthulhu's sprite in Shin Megami Tensei II reflects its description of having a squid-like head with feelers later in Call of Cthulhu, rather than the octopus description from earlier in the text.[4]
In older artwork, Cthulhu has a penis for a tongue. This detail is not present in any of its sprites, nor its model in Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2.
