Nomenclature

イチロウ Ichirō, written in kanji as 一郎 Ichirō is a given name meaning 'first son'. 太宰 Dazai comes from 太 da, meaning 'great', and 宰 zai, 'governor'.

Many of the characters in Shin Megami Tensei V share family names with significant Shinto shrines around Japan. Ichiro's family name of Dazai comes from Dazaifu Tenmangu in Fukuoka. It enshrines historical figure Sugawara no Michizane as the Shinto deity Tenjin. Due to the circumstances surrounding Michizane's death, he is known as a vengeful spirit. As a Shinto deity, he is associated with disasters, academia, harvests, and many other things.
