Origin

Fortuna, anglicized as Fortune, is the Roman goddess of luck and chance. She is famously known for her wheel which she spins to randomly decide people's fate. The Romans identified her with the Greek goddess Tyche.

Even as the Roman religion was displaced by Christianity, Fortune and her wheel would continue to be present in European literature and art into the modern era.

Often depicted with a wheel, the symbol fate. Place of origin: Rome Fortuna was the goddess of fate in ancient Rome, considered a representation of fortune and misfortune, and a symbol of caprice and chance. She is considered one of the mother goddesses of the pre-Roman era and is symbolically represented holding a wheel. It was said that this wheel would lift up specific people, bringing them good fortune and success, while simultaneously bringing corresponding misfortune to others. As such, she is often depicted as blindfolded, so that she is incapable of choosing unethically between fortune and misfortune.
Kaneko Kazuma Dennō Akuma Zukan	古代ローマにおける運命の女神。「運命の女神の紡ぎ車」とも呼ばれる。運命を象徴する車輪を持った姿で描かれ、人々に幸運と成功、不運と失意をもたらす。もともとは豊穣を司る女神であったともいわれる。 Translation: The ancient Roman goddess of fate. Also known as the "Wheel of the Goddess of Fate". Depicted holding a wheel symbolizing fate, she brings humans good fortune and success, as well as misfortune and despair. It is also said that she was originally a goddess who ruled over fertility.
