Dzolob is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Dzolob is the name of a race of people from the second epoch of humanity in the Maya creation legend recounted by Alfred Tozzer in his 1907 study A comparative study of the Mayas and the Lacandones. Tozzer's study goes into little detail about the Dzolob, stating only their title and method of destruction; claiming they were destroyed by a great flood. While the name dzolob is not attributed to them, these characteristics are common to the second humanity of the Popol Vuh, who were punished for their inability to worship their creators and their cruelty to others. This humanity was created out of wooden effigies and were capable of speech and reproduction; however, they were without purpose and could not worship nor recall the gods. Because of this, they were destroyed through various methods, including a great flood as well as attacks by animals and the cooking utensils used by the second humanity.

Design

Dzolob appears as a nude masculine humanoid with dark cracked skin, yellow eyes, and a large protruding forehead which resembles the elongated foreheads produced by head binding practices. The cracks on their skin resemble cracked stone; however, due to their potential connection to the second humanity of the Popol Vuh, it is possible it is meant to resemble wood bark. The figure is wearing handcuffs; according to Kazuma Kaneko, the handcuffs were placed due to their title of "the Offenders", which was translated to criminal in Japanese.
