The Cuvier Syndrome is an affliction in Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2.

Profile

The Cuvier Syndrome is the state of irreversible petrification that humans experience when hit with data from the Sun. The petrification does not affect all people at the same rate, with some being petrified in seconds, while others can survive for longer. Humans with Atma are immune to Cuvier Syndrome. It is named after Margot Cuvier.

The Cuvier Syndrome began in the late 20th century, alongside several other maladies that affected humanity. Cuvier Syndrome is named after the person who discovered it, Margot Cuvier, though it was Jenna Angel and David Gale's studies during their time in the International Environmental Stabilization Comittee that would link it to data hidden within the sunlight. David himself contracted Cuvier Syndrome, though he instead died from a terrorist attack to the isolation ward he was staying at, trusting that Angel would be able to find a cure.

With the blackening of the Sun, Cuvier Syndrome became a larger threat, petrifying anyone who was exposed to sunlight. Most of humanity was forced to move underground, though the Karma Society developed a dome around Karma City that blocks the harmful effects of sunlight, allowing humans and plants to live under it. With the development of the Atma virus by Angel, humans could inoculate themselves against the Cuvier Syndrome at the cost of becoming a Demon. Both Angel and Margot Cuvier believe that all humans should be infected with the virus to live under the Sun again, though they differ in how society should evolve from that point: Cuvier believes the Karma Society should be in control and deal with hunger using Sera, while Angel believes that people should be free to devour each other and judged solely on their karma.

Once the Embryon's Solar Data reach the Sun and win their fight against Brahman, the Sun is returned to normal and no longer causes Cuvier Syndrome.
