Shigenori Soejima designed Izanagi to look manly: He has a boys' school uniform, a knife, and he gives off the vibes of an Ōendan leader. The decision to make Izanagi manly comes from how not much is known or spoken about him in Japanese culture aside from him being known as the very first man.[1] Soejima picked the large knife as a weapon even though Izanagi is depicted wielding a spear because young Japanese men thought that carrying a knife would make them feel manly and he wanted the protagonist's youth to reflect in the design. He also wanted to add some of Izanagi's manly design elements to the protagonist as well, but felt that would make the character's design a bit too cliche.[2] Izanagi's shoes are based on tengu geta which has a single raised tooth on the bottom.[3]
