This article is about the location in Persona 3. For the location in Megami Ibunroku Persona, see Thanatos Tower.

Tartarus is a location in Persona 3 and Persona 3 Reload. During the day, it is Gekkoukan High School located on the small island of Tatsumi Port Island. During the Dark Hour, it transforms into a distorted maze and serves a central role in the story of the game. Each block is visually different with more powerful Shadows on higher floors. The blocks in order are Thebel, Arqa, Yabbashah, Tziah, Harabah and Adamah.

Gameplay

Tartarus Entrance as shown in Persona 3 Reload

After the school transforms into Tartarus during the Dark Hour, the Tartarus entrance can be accessed. The entrance contains a door to the Velvet Room, a clock to save your progress, a teleporter to reach higher floors, and the Tartarus Entrance to the Thebel block.

Persona 3 and Persona 3 FES

By returning to the entrance, the party's SP and HP will be fully restored. By participating in many battles, party members can become tired. When tired, they are more likely to miss, deal less damage and take more damage. The tired status can only be removed after leaving Tartarus by resting well or by using the bathroom. If a party member has the tired status, they will leave the party and Tartarus for the night.

At specific levels in Tartarus are special teleporters that can return the party to the entrance and provide a shortcut back to the floor. These floors also contain Tartarus Bosses called Guardians which will block the party from ascending Tartarus until they are defeated.

In Persona 3 and Persona 3 FES, party members do not have direct commands and will act on their own in battle. The protagonist can influence their actions, and change and adjust their behavior in the Tactics Menu. From the start, the protagonist can order his teammates to Act Freely, Heal / Support, Assign Target, or Stand By.

If the party remains on one floor too long, The Reaper will spawn after many warnings from the navigator. Occasionally the party will arrive on smaller special floors with no enemies, causing The Reaper to spawn more quickly. In Shuffle Time, occasionally a card will be marked with a skull. If selected, The Reaper will spawn more quickly.

Upon reaching the Adamah Block in Persona 3, The Monad Depths would become available in the entrance. In Persona 3 FES, defeating The Reaper is also required to unlock The Monad Depths moving forward.

Persona 3 Portable

In Persona 3 Portable, the ability to regain HP and SP by returning to the entrance is removed. The protagonist must interact with the clock located in the entrance and pay to restore full HP and SP. The tired mechanic was tweaked so that party members will only get tired after leaving Tartarus. A new item named Yawn-B-Gone can be purchased to remove tiredness entirely.

Direct Commands was introduced in Persona 3 Portable allowing the protagonist to give each party member direct commands in battle.

Persona 3 Reload

Persona 3 Reload introduced significant changes to Tartarus compared to its previous iterations. You can no longer restore HP and SP by returning to the entrance like in Persona 3 and Persona 3 FES. Similarly to Persona 3 Portable, the protagonist must interact with the clock located in the entrance and spend seven Twilight Fragments to restore HP and SP[1]. Twilight Fragments will also be necessary to open chests.

The Monad Depths from the original Persona 3 have been transformed into Monad Doors and Monad Passages. Behind Monad Doors are rare treasure chests and a powerful shadow protecting it. Monad Passages similarly contain many powerful shadows with the promise of rare items such as weapons, costumes and items that cannot be attained in normal treasure chests.
