Tactics refer to preset commands given to party member's AI in the Persona series.

Overview

Tactics are a mechanic introduced in Persona 3. When a party member is not being directly controlled by the player, they are controlled by an AI which determines which actions they take. The behavior of this AI is controlled by the character's current Tactics option, which can be changed during the protagonist's turn in battle, or outside of battle. The Tactics options determine which actions the character is allowed to take, which skills they will prioritize using, and which enemies they will prioritize targeting.

Mechanics by Game

Persona 3

Tactics are assigned in battle during the protagonist's turn. Not all Tactics options are immediately available, with some instead becoming available as the story progresses. As there is no way of directly controlling party members other than the protagonist, this is the only means by which the player can influence their actions.

  • Act Freely: Character will act freely.
  • Heal/Support: Character will heal and use Support skills. They will attack if all party members are at full health and none of their Support skills would be effective.
  • Assign Target: Player selects an enemy for the character to attack until it dies. Once the target is dead, the character returns to Act Freely.
  • Stand By: Character will Wait.
  • Conserve SP: After May 9. Character will not spend SP, except to cast Spirit Drain.
  • Knock Down: After June 8. Character will try to Down all enemies via weaknesses or their attack with the highest Critical Hit rate. If they cannot possibly Down any enemy, they will Wait.
  • Full Assault: After July 7. Character will attack a single target until it dies.
  • Same Target: After August 6. Character will attack the same enemy as the protagonist.
  • Attack Fallen: After September 5. Character will attack enemies that are Downed.
  • Orgia Mode: Exclusive to Aigis. Her attack is doubled for 3 turns, then she overheats for 3 turns, then returns to Act Freely.
  • Analyse: Exclusive to Navigator Mitsuru Kirijo. Player selects an enemy's resistances to be analyzed, which is completed after 3 actions, or displays an analyzed enemy's information.
  • Full Analyse: Exclusive to Fuuka Yamagishi. Behaves the same as Analyse, but also displays the enemy's skills if possible.
  • Request Help: Exclusive to Navigators. If any party members are absent from the current battle, calls for them to join.
  • Oracle: Exclusive to Fuuka Yamagishi, once per day. Casts Oracle a few turns after this is selected.

Persona 3 FES

In The Answer, all Tactics options are immediately available, but Aigis cannot access Orgia Mode due to being the main character. Instead, Metis has an unique Tactics option:

  • Neo Orgia Mode: Exclusive to Metis. Her attack is doubled and her SP costs are nulled for 4 turns, then she overheats for 3 turns, then returns to Act Freely.

Persona 3 Portable

The same Tactics options as in Persona 4 are present, though Analyse, Full Analyse, Orgia Mode, Oracle and Request Help are carried over from the original release. Furthermore, they are always available instead of being unlocked via story progress.

Persona 3 Reload

The same Tactics options as in Persona 4 are present.

Persona 4

Tactics can be assigned both in battle and out of battle by speaking to the Navigator. All Tactics are available from the start.

  • Act Freely: Character does whatever they like
  • Full Assault: Character fights without being concerned about their SP
  • Conserve SP: Character fights while using as little SP as possible
  • Heal/Support: Character fights while prioritizing healing when HP is low
  • Direct Commands: Player inputs the character's commands directly like with the protagonist

Persona 5

Party member tactics can be changed outside of battles in the Stats screen, or by opening the Order menu and selecting "Tactics" during Joker's turn in a battle. The Tactics system has the same settings as Persona 4. AI-controlled party members will use gun attacks on enemies when set to Act Freely or Conserve SP,[citation needed] or when an enemy has a weakness to them.
