Labrys is a main character in Persona 4 Arena. She is an Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapon and member of the Shadow Operatives like her sister Aigis. She works under Mitsuru Kirijo.

Profile

Labrys is an Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapon created by the Kirijo Group two generations before Aigis. She first appears on Yakushima where she is first activated and where her Story Mode in Persona 4 Arena takes place. When she was first activated, Labrys' thoughts were simple and consisted of technical statements, but over time in her Story Mode grow in eloquence and emotion until she is forced to destroy her closest friend, Unit #024. Labrys broke free of her restraints and ran, though was eventually captured and sealed away until the events of Persona 4 Arena, 13 years later.

During Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Labrys is shown caring individual who doesn't want to hurt anyone she cares about, but is willing to fight to protect them. She is strong and confident in her demeanor, but also has a playful and friendly side, shown when she allows Teddie's request to be her Knight or carrying Detective Kurosawa to the roof of the building they were escaping from. She is still naïve about the world.

Labrys was designed with a white and silver exterior, pale skin, light blue hair styled into a ponytail, red eyes, and a large transformable Labrys axe attached to her back that doubles as wings with the use of built-in thrusters. Her outfit consists of the Yasogami High School summer uniform.

Gameplay

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax

In Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, Labrys is a heavy offensive character that operates based on momentum. Unique to Labrys, she gains more damage based on her axe tiers that increase the more she attacks with her axe, blocked or not. When it reaches red, all axe attacks have added hitstun, cause Fatal Counters whenever a normal Counter hit would be made, and do the maximum amount of damage with which even her auto combo can reach extremely high damage.

Notable Moves
Move Input Notes
C Normal Persona attack. Covers alot of ground space and pulls opponent towards you.
Jump C Air normal Persona attack. Has a vacuum effect on airborne enemies.
5D Fires two arrows. If followed by an additional D input, it fires even more arrows. Best used for pressure.
2C Summons a slow set of laser swords from below that sweep upward and hit in a huge arc. VERY slow, but causes a large amount of untechable time.
Chain Knuckle ↓↘→ + A/B Labrys extends one of her arms across the screen. A range is 1/2 the screen, B is 3/4. Pressing 6 on hit / block pulls you towards opponent, 4 stops movement cancels Winch dash, and A/B during Winch Dash for varying attacks.
Guillotine Axe ↓↙← + A/B High damage move. Key move in combos as it builds a VERY large amount of Axe Gauge. Can be used in the air.
Weaver's Art: Sword ↓↓ + A/B/C/D Summons a spike from the ground that traps opponents on hit. Comes up at different distances depending on the button pressed.
Weaver's Art: Orb ↓↘→ + C/D Creates an orb that travels different distances depending on the button pressed.
Weaver's Art: Beast ↓↘→↓↘→ + C/D A dashing charge attack, followed by an uppercut. Does more damage proportional to axe gauge.
Weaver's Art: Breaking Wheel ↓↙←↓↙← + C/D Only available while Awakened. Summons three gears on the ground in front of Labrys. Fully invincible, and incredibly fast startup. Appears in different locations depending on button pressed.
Brutal Impact ↓↙←↓↙← + A/B Unblockable super with guard point against all attacks during startup. Does massive damage on hit. B version completely drains axe gauge.
Weaver's Art: Inquisition ↓↓↓ + C+D Labrys' instant kill move. Requires her Persona, a match point, and 100 SP meter.

Persona 4 Arena

Labrys was originally Unit #031, one of the many models of Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapons created by the Kirijo Group to gather test data on Yakushima. Due to her larger Plume of Dusk, she began showing signs of emotion upon activation and developed her ego at a quicker rate than the other units, including an accent unique to her. In between being forced to kill her sister units for combat data and inheriting their memories, she and the other units were let outside to mingle amongst eachother. Here, #031 meets and befriends Unit 024, an older unit who was more emotionally developed than the others, who serves as #031's only friend alongside Snowy, a white dog that #024 found and cared for. Eventually, #031 is dubbed "Fifth Generation Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapon Labrys" and is told testing will soon be done. Upon telling Unit #024 this news, #024 told Labrys about her personal goal to find a certain someone, and gave Labrys an archive with a request that she was not to open it until it was all over. Later, Labrys is ordered to destroy her remaining sister units in an attempt to bring out her Persona through mental stress, despite Labrys' protests. This includes Unit #024, who Labrys is forced to fight, but her attempts to disarm her and spare her life are made useless when the scientists hijack #024's body and force Labrys to destroy her. Labrys inherits #024's memories and notices a voice, later revealed to be the girl whose personality was used as the basis of the personality of the early Anti-Shadow Weapons, and that #024 wanted to meet her and thank her for loving them.

This causes Labrys to cry, which the scientists notice and comment on. One suggests deleting her 'sentimental memories' as they believe a weapon has no use of them. Enraged at this and the treatment of her sisters, Labrys breaks out of her restraints and attempts to fight her way out of the facility and escape the island, but only manages to make it to the pier on the beach. Seeing the ocean for the first time, Labrys makes a wish that one of her successors would stand on this pier and find the person they are searching for, and that they would be able to go where she could not. Labrys then willingly surrendered and, due to the damages she inflicted upon the facility, was deactivated instead, and her memory was transferred to all later units such as Aigis.

13 years later, Labrys would be found by the Kirijo Group under Mitsuru Kirijo, though after receiving Labrys' container from Yakushima, the plane Mitsuru was on was hijacked and Labrys was stolen and taken to Inaba, where she was thrown into the TV. During this time, Labrys dreams of the girl she and #024 wanted to meet, and from that girl gets the idea of becoming a student council president. A voice appears in Labrys' head and shows her vision of Yasogami High School, offering her the chance to go to school and be the student council president. Labrys is brainwashed by the malevolent entity into thinking that she is the human student council president and that the school she is in is the real Yasogami High School.

In reality, the fake school was Labrys' dungeon in the TV World, created by her desire to be understood and accepted as a normal girl and her trauma over being forced to kill her fellow Anti-Shadow Weapons. This caused her dungeon to take the form of Yasogami High School and the P-1 Grand Prix, and allowed her to become the Student Countil President of the fake school. Labrys is part of the plan set up by the Malevolent Entity, who seeks to manipulate Persona users to fight each other so their Personas regress into Shadow Selves, which will absorb to create a body that lets him burn the world into ashes.

She runs into Elizabeth, who attempts to show Labrys the truth, and while Labrys fights her off, she is haunted by her words and is reminded of her promise to #024. Once the other Persona users of the Investigation Team and some of the Shadow Operatives groups arrive in the Arena and start causing problems, Labrys attempts to stop them, still believing in her Student Council President role. Mitsuru and Aigis realize who she is, but she is captured by "General Teddie," actually her Shadow in disguise, who goads her into rejecting it so it can go berserk.

After the Shadow is defeated, Labrys accepts her flaws with the help of both the Shadow Operatives and the Investigation Team and awakens her own Persona, Ariadne. Despite the incident seeming resolved, Labrys' mind is suddenly hacked by the human culprit outside the TV, and is controlled by the culprit to attack the player, before being freed by either Fuuka or the player fighting off Labrys. During the epilogue, Labrys joins with her sister Aigis and the Shadow Operatives, vowing to find the culprit of this incident, and they also vow to find the girl she and #024 wished to meet. Aigis also reveals that Labrys' wish came true as Aigis met the Hero of Persona 3 on the same pier, being able to leave the island and find happiness.

Persona 3 Drama CD: Moonlight

The "fifth-generation Labrys" was briefly mentioned in the dialog of Persona 3 Drama CD: Moonlight. Though the character wasn't planned to be in any games at the time of the CD's release in 2007, the lead writer for Persona 4 Arena, Yuichiro Tanaka, later confirmed this character was the same as the one that later debuted in the fighting game.[1]
