Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
After a spatial anomaly known as the Schwarzwelt appeared in Antarctica, the United Nations formed a secret organization known as the Schwarzwelt Joint Program to address the burgeoning crisis. As the Schwarzwelt expanded across the continent, several scientific labs were destroyed, which the United Nations falsely reported as a planned withdrawal due to a "giant ferro-magnetic storm."[1][3] In an attempt to learn more about the phenomena, the Joint Program sent a series of probes into the Schwarzwelt all of which were destroyed. Their only remains were a set of strange and unsettling photos of environments that resembled human civilization.[4][5] Ultimately, the Joint Program were forced to create an Investigation Team comprised of the world's foremost experts to explore the Schwarzwelt as a last-ditch effort to find any chance of stopping it.[6] This team was equipped with a suite of next-generation technology including the Demonica Suit and a small fleet of Next-Generation Amphibious Assault Ships. However, as the investigation team entered the Schwarzwelt the fleet's plasma shielding was disabled by an unknown and abnormal energy flux. Subsequently, each ship was forcefully separated and stranded within the spatial anomaly without any outside communications.[7][8]
After the crew of the Red Sprite managed to successfully retrieve the graviton radio from the Elve in Sector Carina, contact was reestablished with the Joint Project headquarters for 10 minutes.[9] During this time, the Red Sprite's AI, Arthur, reported their findings in the Schwarzwelt and crew member Williams requested assistance escaping the Schwarzwelt as the expedition was quickly becoming untenable.[10] However, the Joint Program was in no position to help the investigation team. According to their representative, the Schwarzwelt's expansion had progressed to the point where it covered the entire continent. Further, demons had begun to spill out of the void and invade the southernmost regions of Australia, Africa, and South Africa. This led to a worldwide state of emergency which forced every country from around the world to work together in an attempt to push the demons back.[11] There was no direct assistance that the Joint Project could even give, because the investigation team already had access to their most advanced technology.[12] The only support they could offer was the firing of a graviton beam, which the investigation team would be able to use as a reference for their current space-time coordinates.[13] This knowledge would allow the team to more easily search for the "Vanishing Point", a theoretical position where the Schwarzwelt was said to connect with the Earth, through which they could escape.[14][15][16] Arthur would spend the remaining minutes of the communication to send the Joint Project their observational data in hopes that it's analysis could lead to a new solution for the Schwarzwelt.[2]
As the Red Sprite reached Sector Eridanus, where the Vanishing Point was said to be located, the crew would once again contact the Joint Project headquarters to notify them of the crew's current position; however, the Joint Project had news of their own. Unbeknownst to the investigation team, the Joint Project had been designing a plan known as "Operation: Schwarzwelt Elimination" based on the observational data given to them by Arthur, which entailed a large series of nuclear warheads being detonated together around the Schwarzwelt, covering it in a gigantic explosion of plasma. This was theorized to cause a chain reaction where the immense heat of the blast would destabilize the particles comprising the Schwarzwelt, which would lead to it collapsing on itself. All of their calculations have suggested that this will succeed.[17][18] This information concerned the crew, but the Joint Project representative promised them that while the plan needed to be commenced as soon as possible, they would be paused until the investigation team had successfully escaped the Schwarzwelt.[19]

Once the crew finally reached the Vanishing Point and began their escape, the Red Sprite would suddenly begin to malfunction as they were attacked by an unknown energy signature.[20] As the ship shutdown and hurtled through space, the members of the ship would receive a vision from the Three Wise Men. Here, the Joint Project could be seen betraying the investigation team by initiating Operation: Schwarzwelt Elimination before they could escape. However, despite all of their calculations, the explosion would not effect the Schwarzwelt.[21] The Three Wise Men would then tell the Red Sprite's crew that the only way to escape the Schwarzwelt is to take all of the Exotic Matter from the Mothers before fading away.[22] As the crew regained control of their senses, they would find themselves stranded in a new Sector with their graviton radio, the only means for them to contact the outside world, destroyed.[23][24]
On the Neutral route, this would ultimately lead to Arthur preparing a revision of the Operation: Schwarzwelt Elimination, "Plan Omega". The proposed plan would utilize a nuclear warhead on board of the abandoned Gigantic to detonate the Cosmic Eggs, which contain enough energy to either create or destroy the world.[25][26] After Mem Aleph is defeated and the Schwarzwelt is destroyed, the investigation team returns to Antarctica and is contacted by the Joint Project headquarters, which congratulates them for their hard work and dispatches a rescue team to bring them back to base.[27]
Trivia
- Despite having access to the same technology as the Schwarzwelt Investigation Team, Jack's Squad is not associated with the Schwarzwelt Joint Project.[28]

They're getting separated from the formation! / Ops Woman: Early warning systems are picking up an abnormal flux! Our ship's being pulled in by an unknown gravitational force! / Ops Crew: Control system alert! The nav systems have been compromised! ...I'm picking up a problem with the shield as well, Sir! / Ops Woman: The plasma shield's output has dropped! It can't withstand the impacts from outside! We'll be sitting ducks at this rate!" Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.

We can recharge it once that's up, but it'll take several days worth of time and effort." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "At any rate, it's impossible to continue the investigation as planned. Can you put together an escape plan and send in reinforcements!?" Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Joint Project: The Schwarzwelt has completely covered Antarctica. All Antarctic bases were overrun with demons. After that, they moved north. The southern regions of Africa, Australia, and South America are under attack. A worldwide state of emergency is in effect. Every nation is banding together to repel the demons." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Unfortunately, neither of those things are possible. You already have our most advanced technology created on our theories on the Schwarzwelt. If you're saying you can't escape, even with that. There's nothing we can do for you." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Joint Project: We could use the graviton beam to help you pinpoint your space-time coordinates. Our graviton beam will travel straight, without any dimensional interference. If the Red Sprite can catch it, your position in space-time should become clearer. We haven't abandoned you." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Arthur: I must explain the importance of the space-time coordinates. The chief reason we cannot escape the Schwarzwelt is that we do not know where we are escaping from. Even if we could increase our movement capabilities, without a proper grasp of our position. We would be in danger of wandering the Schwarzwelt forever. With the graviton beam sent by the Joint Project, we can at last learn our present whereabouts." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Arthur: Alas, our scant data so far makes it difficult to verify a region through which we can escape. Let us hope we will learn something in the fourth sector. We should soon find an escape method as well as a location to escape from. Our goal is the ""Vanishing Point" at the end of the quantum tunnel." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Arthur: The crew has worked diligently in analyzing the Schwarzwelt's structure. You have obtained and analyzed all the Rosetta thus far. This has allowed us to successfully navigate several quantum tunnels. Moreover, we have cooperated with the Joint Project on Earth to calculate our space-time location. We have amassed a vast store of data about the Schwarzwelt. This data is nearly sufficient to pinpoint our final destination: The Vanishing Point that connects this world to the outside world." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Joint Project:We owe everyone on the crew a great deal. Thanks to you, we've learned a lot about the Schwarzwelt. Which brings me to the point. We were able to use your research to devise a plan to eradicate the Schwarzwelt. We call it, "OperatIion: Schwarzwelt Elimination." / Jimenez: Operation... Schwarzwelt Elimination!? / Zelenin: Is that possible!?" Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Joint Project: The surface of the Schwarzwelt is composed of incredibly unstable fluidizing particle bonds. It's one of the Schwarzwelt's general properties. It's by exploiting that property that we'll be able to destroy the Schwarzwelt. I'll outline the stages of the plan for you. We'll set nuclear warheads around the Schwarzwelt and set them off in a chain reaction. The giant plasma fireball caused by the explosion will cover the entire Schwarzwelt. Its heat will break the fluidizing particle bonds, causing them to collapse. Thus destroying the Schwarzwelt. All our computer simulations of the attack result in success. Them only thing left to do now is to wait to execute it." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Jimenez: You wouldn't start the operation with us still in here... would you? / Joint Project: ......No, of course not. Your lives and research are immensely important. We'll commence the operation the instant you escape the Schwarzwelt." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Announcer: We are on track for our charted course to the Vanishing Point. We are currently on course. According to our calculations, it should take approximately 20 minutes. / Kato: There's a problem! Something's stopping us from going forward! An unidentified energy signature is approaching from the rear!" Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Right Voice: Well, well. It seems another fruitless struggle has begun. / Left Voice: The "thunder" of humans... quite a number of them, at that! / Middle Voice: They fail to grasp the depths of the universe's providence. Hmm... and lo, they detonate their "thunder"... But behold: they will be swallowed. / Zelenin: I-Is this a vision...!? Is that... the Schwarzwelt being struck with nuclear weapons!? / Jimenez: They already started the operation!? Shit! They tricked us! We're not out yet, dammit...! / Zelenin: But... nothing's happening. / Jimenez: Ay Dios mio. it's not working! It didn't even make a scratch! The operation failed!" Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Middle Voice: None can stop the Earth's anger. It is no longer given to humans to choose their own way. You and all your kind will live in the cursed lands...! But no... hold... / Right Voice: But no... hold... / Left Voice: But no... hold... / Middle Voice: If you can gather all of the Exotic Matter. / Left Voice: If you can gather all of the Exotic Matter that the Mothers carry... ...And so I see you have one already, Protagonist. / Right Voice: If you can gather all of the Exotic Matter that controls the Vanishing Point... The path may yet open." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "MacCleary: This isn't Earth...! We ended up in another unidentified space-time sector! / Mia: I don't believe this... we're still stranded out here...?" Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Williams: ...Hold on a sec. Comms, can you raise the Joint Project? / Muccino: Oh, right! I'll set up a line... Wh... what!? What the hell is this!? The graviton radio's smashed! There's no way we can use this!" Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Arthur: The following theory was developed primarily on the information from Commander Gore. While wandering the Schwarzwelt, Commander Gore discovered the existence of high-energy matter. This matter is known as a Cosmic Egg. These Cosmic Eggs have enough energy to create and/or swallow an entire space-time continuum. It is this energy that Mem Aleph intends to use to reconstruct the Earth. Plan Omega is to take this energy for our own purposes and use it to destroy the Schwarzwelt." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "Mackie: So, where is this detonation energy? / Arthur: Ship 4, the Gigantic. The Gigantic was equipped with a nuclear warhead in case of any unforeseen emergencies. We will use that warhead as our detonator." Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS). Developed by Atlus. English.
- ↑ "This is the Schwarzwelt Joint Project. Please respond. Is this the Red Sprite? I see. This is incredible! We'll dispatch a rescue squad to pick you up immediately. You men just sit tight... But I'm dying to know. how did you destroy the Schwarzwelt!? Here, this satellite photo was just taken. The Schwarzwelt, the demons--they've all disappeared!"
