Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
Due to humankind destroying the Earth's environment, the Schwarzwelt appeared near the South Pole in the early 21st century.[1] As the Schwarzwelt expanded throughout the continent, a wall of plasma clouds surrounding it atomized any object it came in contact with including several scientific labs.[2] In order to avoid public unrest, the United Nations falsely reported the Schwarzwelt simply as a "giant ferro-magnetic blizzard" and claimed that every nation jointly agreed to peacefully withdraw from the region before the situation grew worse.[3] Ultimately, the United Nations were forced to create the Schwarzwelt Joint Project and send an investigation team comprised of the world's most foremost experts to discover a way to reverse the expansion of the Schwarzwelt.
At the time of its creation, the Schwarzwelt was one meter in diameter; however, by the time the survey team had reached the continent, it had expanded to a radius of several hundred kilometers.[4] While the expedition team is exploring Sector Carina, the Schwarzwelt Joint Project headquarters reports that the Schwarzwelt had entirely covered Antarctica, demons were infesting every base left on the continent, and some had even begun to invade the southern portions of Australia, Africa, and South America causing a worldwide state of emergency.[5] This is later reiterated in Sector Eridanus.[6]
