Setsuko Sonomura is a minor character in Megami Ibunroku Persona. She is Maki Sonomura's mother and worked at SEBEC as a elite engineer involved in the creation of the DEVA System.

Common Route
Setsuko is first mentioned at Mikage Hospital by a nurse, saying that she is a failure of a mother to Maki Sonomura, as she never visits her daughter due to her work at SEBEC. While the party talks to Maki in Room 302, she gets frustrated that her mother never comes see her. She calms down, but shortly after, Maki's condition worsens, and is rushed to the ICU.
An earthquake happens, and demons start appearing in Mikage-cho. At some point, Setsuko runs from SEBEC, but is pursued by Takeda and his men. She escapes, but is wounded in the process, and ends up at the Alaya Shrine where she meets Eriko Kirishima, who is headed to the hospital to check on the party.
Eriko brings back the party to the shrine, where they hear Philemon's message and meet Setsuko. She warns the party of Takahisa Kandori and his use of the Deva System she developed. Learning that the Mikage Police has been overrun by demons, she entrusts the party with a security card to the Abandoned Factory through which she escaped the SEBEC Building, then faints from her gunshot wound. The party then splits, and Eriko, Yukino Mayuzumi and the protagonist bring the woman back to St. Hermelin High School.
At the school infirmary, after recovering, she tells Saeko Takami about the events that have happened up until then, feeling responsible for the crisis happening. From there, the protagonist can roam the school building, and either start the SEBEC Route or Snow Queen Route.
SEBEC Route
While exploring the Haunted Mansion in Maki's Idealized World, the party encounters Hariti in the Warp Room on 3F. The demon talks about having found Maki, and the party recognizes Setsuko's voice. The optional party member will advise to defeat Hariti, thinking it's a trap and that Maki's life is in danger, while Masao Inaba will advise the protagonist to lower his weapon. If the protagonist decides to not fight Hariti, an additional totem will be awarded near the end of the Alaya Cavern. Otherwise the party will fight the demon, with Maki leaving the party temporarly.
Regardless of the choice made, Hariti turns back into Setsuko. Setsuko explains that while at the school infirmary, she dreamt of the days when she would search Maki who would get lost in the Haunted Mansion when she was a child, but after hearing Maki call for her in the dream, she does not remember anything. Maki then tells her she is not her real child, and Kei Nanjo gives an explanation of the idealized world. Before being able to properly explain why Setsuko does not exist in this world, the dimensional passageway linking the Haunted Mansion to Deva Yuga starts to flicker. Setsuko decides to stay behind to operate the device stabilizing the passageway. Before leaving, Maki tells Setsuko that while she does not have a mother, she wishes she could have one as kind and caring as her, and promises to bring back her daughter.
If the bad ending was avoided, the party will be brought back to the Lost Forest by Maki's compact. There, they will meet Setsuko. Similarly to the Haunted Mansion, she was brought here after hearing Maki call for her. The party tells her about Kandori's defeat and Maki running away after finding out the truth about her world. Hearing the voice of Mai sobbing, Setsuko decides to follow the party inside the forest despite the danger.
At the Gingerbread House, Setsuko meets with Mai, and comforts the crying girl. Mai explains that Aki released the worst aspect of Maki, Pandora, and this entity is trying to make the world disappear. In order to reach Pandora, the party will need the three compacts and the Ideal Maki's help, who can be found deeper in the forest.
Setsuko continues to follow the party into Maki's room. She tries to convince her to come back, but the ideal Maki refuses, feeling guilty about all the suffering she has caused, saying to the protagonist that she is the worst girl alive. If the protagonist tells her to stop hiding, an additional totem will be awarded in Alaya Cavern. Following Nanjo's harsh speech, the ideal Maki comes back to her senses and apologizes for her behaviour, telling her mother she held a grudge on her when Setsuko was working for Maki's sake. Setsuko thanks the party for bringing her back.
Back at the Gingerbread House, Mai tells the party that the the real Maki's conciousness holds the last compact in the Alaya Cavern. Setsuko wishes to follow the party, but the ideal Maki asks her to stay here, as she can deal with the situation with her friends. She asks Mai to take care of her mother, and Setsuko accepts to stay. If talked to, Setsuko will explain that Maki's magic chant "Erusaer Tsymmom" was taught by her to help Maki when she was lonely at the hospital. As Maki was alone with her mother busy with work and her father deceased, Setsuko told her that this chant would make her sense her presence, wherever she was.
Snow Queen Route
As Setsuko is inside the school infirmary when the school is turned into the Ice Castle, she can be found during the Snow Queen Route. If the player goes to the infirmary to recruit Kei Nanjo, she'll wonder how to help Maki and laments that the crisis has also affected the school. If the bad ending was avoided and Nanjo did not join the party, Setsuko will explain that Nanjo left the infirmary.
