マウイは人間に対する功績を多く持つことで知られる。海の底から島々を釣り上げたこと、太陽の運行を遅くしたこと、人間に火を授けたことなどがそれである。

彼は人間に不死を授けようとして、寝ている死の女神ヒネ・ヌイ・テ・ポの身体に入ろうとするが、途中で目を覚まされてしまい、その命を落とした。

A mischievous hero spoken of in Polynesia from Hawaii to New Zealand.

Maui is known for having done many feats for mankind. He raised islands from the bottom of the sea, slowed the movement of the sun, granted fire to humanity, and more.

In an effort to grant humans immortality, he entered the body of the sleeping goddess of death Hine-nui-te-pō, but she awoke partway through and he lost his life.
