Origin

Daisōjō (大僧正) is the highest title of Buddhist clergy in Japan. Compendium entries make reference to monks who died while fasting; this practice was referred to as sokushinbutsu (即身仏) and involved the practitioner restricting their diet until death by starvation, at which point they would naturally mummify.
