Guidelines:Infoboxes

Jump to navigation Jump to search

The infobox policy of Megami Tensei Wiki defines how the wiki's infobox templates should be used.

General

Infoboxes are templates designed to give a brief overview of a subject's basic information at a quick glance, which can include the subject's name(s), their image(s), and any supplemental information appropriate to the infobox's parameter fields. Infoboxes are displayed near the top of a page as one of the first things that readers will see, either in the top-right corner on PC or following the page lede on mobile. As such, infoboxes should always be at the very top of a page immediately following the header space (where notice and maintenance templates go) if there is one.

There are a number of different infobox templates for certain page types to suit their individual needs. Each of these infoboxes have their own information parameters and requirements for how they should be filled. This guideline page aims to explain these in-depth.

The most general policy for all infoboxes are that they should avoid spoilers wherever possible and should only include information relevant to the given subject. If a parameter field is non-applicable to a subject, then it should be omitted from the infobox. For example: If a character does not have a Persona, then the Persona parameter is non-applicable and should be omitted.

General Parameters

These are general parameters that can be found in all or most infobox types.

Parameter Explanation
title / name
This changes the title or name displayed at the top of the infobox. By default, the infobox's title is the same the article title and is thus usually already covered. However, if the page name contains a discriminator, the infobox's title parameter should be used to state just the subject's name.
displaytitle
This changes how the article's header title is displayed. This parameter should only be used if the page's title needs to be italicized for media titles.
jptitle / jpname
This displays the subject's Japanese title or name in the infobox. This should be the exact Japanese title used, including any stylization.
jpmean
The translation (or transliteration if a given name) of the Japanese title or name.
zhname
For displaying the subject's Simplified Chinese title or name in the infobox. This should only be used for media and related subjects that were initially released in China. This mainly only applies to Persona 5: The Phantom X-related content.
zhmean
The translation (or transliteration if a given name) of the Chinese title or name.
image / imagecover
The subject's image. This field merely requires the filename, without the "File:" prefix or brackets. The image can be given a caption by adding a pipe | between the file name and caption. If there is presently no image available of the subject, use File:No Image.png as a placeholder. If no depictions exist of the subject at all, such as a character only mentioned, do not use this field.

Multiple images can be inserted into infobox tabs by enclosing them in <gallery></gallery> tags and assigning them captions, with the captions becoming the tab names. Infobox galleries should only be added if a subject has multiple depictions across media or covers across re-releases. As such, the tabs should be named after the abbreviated platform or media title that the image is from.
seoimage
This parameter encourages that a particular image file be displayed when an article is previewed in a search engine (as opposed to displaying one at random), as part of search engine optimization. This helps to prevent search engines from potentially displaying any spoilery or unrelated images. Thus, this parameter should be used if a page contains multiple images; though it is encouraged to assign one in advance.

The SEO image should generally be the same image used in the infobox, but if necessary can also be an image used elsewhere on the page. For media releases, the SEO image should be of the media's cover, its title screen, title card, or otherwise its logo. For characters, Demons, locations, equipment, etc, the SEO image should be of their initial appearance or otherwise anything not considered spoilery.
