Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army was developed as a sequel to the Devil Summoner series, following the development of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne Maniax.[1] It was initially planned for handheld consoles with a modern-day setting.[2] It took more than two years to develop.[3] At TGS 2005, it was revealed under the working title Devil Summoner Kuzunoha Raidou.[4]
Trivia
- In real life, the Taishō era only lasted to Taishō 15, 1926 on the Gregorian calendar. If the Taishō era did extend to Taishō 20, the game would take place in 1931.
- Kazuma Kaneko was not involved in the design process of many, if not all, of the new demons created for the game.[5]
- The idea for the Soulless Army was inspired by the weapons developed by units like Unit 731 during World War II.[6]
- According to Kazuma Kaneko, the shift away from the focus on Chinese culture for the setting in Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner towards Shinto in Raidou was influenced by the staff's view of the organizational structure of the Summoners featured in the game. He also noted that during that period, Megami Tensei games often had a unique focus on a specific culture.[7]
Nomenclature
The term "Chōriki" (超力) in the Japanese title refers to over-technology, a concept in Japanese science fiction involving technology which surpasses contemporary capabilities.[8]
