Profile
Origin
Callisto (Ancient Greek: Καλλιστώ, Kallistṓ, lit. "most beautiful") is an Arcadian nymph, or in some accounts, the daughter of King Lycaon, in Greek mythology. As a devoted follower and hunting companion of the goddess Artemis, Callisto took a strict vow of lifelong chastity. Her beauty attracted the attention of Zeus, who seduced or forced himself upon her, in some versions disguising himself as Artemis or Apollo to gain her trust. Callisto became pregnant as a result, which remained hidden until months later when Artemis and her nymphs were bathing. Upon discovering her broken vow, an enraged Artemis banished Callisto from her sacred circle.
After Callisto gave birth to a son named Arcas, Zeus's jealous wife Hera transformed her into a bear as punishment, though alternative versions attribute the transformation to Artemis as a curse or to Zeus to hide her from Hera. Sixteen years later, while wandering the forests as a wild beast, Callisto encountered her grown son Arcas out hunting. Unaware of the bear's identity, Arcas raised his javelin to strike her down. To prevent the tragedy of matricide, Zeus intervened and swept both mother and son into the heavens, transforming Callisto into the constellation Ursa Major and Arcas into Ursa Minor or Boötes. In a variation recorded by Hyginus, Artemis shot Callisto down while she was in bear form before Zeus placed her among the stars.
