Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible is a 1992 role-playing game for the Game Boy, and the first entry in the Last Bible series. It was developed by Multimedia Intelligence Transfer, published by Atlus, and released on December 25, 1992 in Japan. A remaster featuring an expanded story and updated graphics was released for the Game Gear on April 22, 1994. The original release was later ported to the Game Boy Color on May 19, 1999, which featured slightly updated graphics that made full use of the platform's color display. The Game Boy Color version was subsequently released in North America as Revelations: The Demon Slayer in August of that same year.

The Game Gear version of the game received a fan translation and was released on March 31, 2019.

The world has been besieged by Demons and it's up to you to stop them. However, you're going to have to enlist the help of those very same Demons to return peace to the land. Talk to them, recruit them, and fight alongside over 100 of them to defeat the forces of evil. And when that's not enough, fuse them together to create new and more powerful creatures.

Synopsis

El has just graduated his training toward becoming a future Gaia Master, a person in control of the supernatural powers of Gaia, under the tutelage of his teacher, Zodia. El's graduation marks a turning point following the sudden disappearance of the Gaia Masters Michael and Lucifer two years ago. While El and Zodia prepare to train the next generation of Gaia students, Beasts suddenly launch an attack in demand of the Orichalcum, the planet's sources of life. El is urged to hurry to Lemuria Shrine, where one of the planet's four Orichalcum is kept. There he finds the remaining Gaia Masters; Baal, Belial, and Mephisto, urging that the Orichalcum be surrendered.

As El investigates the crisis and challenges the Beasts, he eventually meets and befriends Kishe and Uranus, fellow Gaia Masters-in-training. Together they travel the world to protect the Orichalcum and discover the Beasts' true motives.

Gameplay

Last Bible has a similar approach to conventional role-playing games, where the lead protagonist El travels across a world map as he fights Beasts and visits towns and dungeons along the way. Unlike Atlus's previous Megami Tensei games in the franchise, which featured first-person perspective dungeon crawling, exploration in Last Bible is viewed from an entirely overhead perspective.

El may encounter Beasts that he can either fight for experience and Macca, or attempt to Negotiate into joining his party. Last Bible has a simplified Negotiation system, consisting of a series of preset, orderly questions that El can only respond to with yes or no. Beasts will respond favorably to a certain order of responses given, whereupon they will join El and can be called into his active party. Over the course of the game's story, the characters Kishe and Uranus will eventually join El's party as permanent party members. Allies can also be sent to speak with Beasts, with the success being random.

Through combat, El, Kishe, and Uranus gain experience that will gradually level them up, allowing them to increase one of their stats by one point and learn new magic skills at certain levels. In towns, the party can purchase items and equipment as well as access banks and inns. The party's inventory has a limited number of spaces, requiring that items be periodically deposited at the bank or sold. Macca can also be stored at the banks as well. Inns are able to revive and recover the party for a fee per ally. If the party is wiped out in battle, it will not result in a game over, but instead transport them back to the last inn used and their Macca halved.

Beast Fusions can be performed using Kishe's Combine spell. This may sometimes result in a fusion accident, known as a Mutation, with an unexpected combination result. There are some Beasts that can only be obtained this way.

The Game Boy and Game Boy Color versions have a VS Mode, where players can fight each other's parties over a Game Link Cable connection.

Version Differences

Game Gear

• The Game Gear version has an expanded story, adding additional details not present in the original release or reworking previous scenarios.
  • A pre-title screen exposition explaining the origins of the planet, Orichalcum, and the Gaia Masters was added.
  • El, Kishe, and Uranus have a ritual ceremony backstory as part of their naming sequence at the beginning of the game, in which they are selected to become new Gaia Master candidates. The story is said to take place two years after this ceremony.
  • Some event scenarios were changed in this version, requiring that the player visit different areas or perform different tasks to proceed with the story.
  • The game's ending was significantly expanded with an additional scenario, a new dungeon, and several new bosses.
  • The post-end continuation in the original release, which allowed players to recruit certain exclusive Beasts, is no longer present.
• The Game Gear version is displayed in full color. Some graphics were also touched up or are completely redone, most notably the Beast sprite graphics.
• This version features an unique original soundtrack.
• The VS Mode is no longer present.

Game Boy Color

• The Game Boy Color version is based on the original Game Boy release in content, and thus lacks the revised content and omissions present in the Game Gear version.
• This version makes full use of the Game Boy Color's color display. Some graphics were slightly touched up too, mainly the character sprites and map graphics.
