Naoto Shirogane is a character in Persona 4. Naoto is a member of the Investigation Team and a first year at Yasogami High School, as well as a detective currently working with the Yasoinaba Police Department.
Profile
Naoto Shirogane is a prodigious freelance detective, working alongside the Yasoinaba Police Department to discover the culprit of the double homicide that occurs in Inaba during April, 2011. Despite only being a first year in high school, Naoto takes the role of the fifth in the Shirogane lineage of detectives very seriously, often acting more mature than one Naoto's age would. This causes Naoto to have difficulty taking the feelings of others into account,[6] and Naoto has also expressed a distaste for activities deemed childish.[7] However, despite this, Naoto does occasionally show notes of immaturity, specifically regarding the occult.[8] Naoto was designed with the image of a "young detective boy" in mind, which, according to character designer Shigenori Soejima, is the reason behind Naoto's signature blue newsboy hat.[9] On days in which school is not in session, such as holidays, Naoto is typically seen wearing formal clothing befitting the season, all of which have blue as the primary color. The standard male Yasogami High School uniform is worn on days in which Naoto does go to school. Shoes with platform soles and the aforementioned newsboy hat are present in almost all of Naoto's outfits with very few exceptions.
Gameplay
Persona 4
Naoto is a playable character in Persona 4, joining the party on October 6th, 2011 as the eighth playable character and final member of the Investigation Team. In combat, Naoto wields a handgun alongside the Persona Sukuna-Hikona. Sukuna-Hikona allows Naoto to access Light and Dark instant-kill skills, alongside high-level Physical and Almighty attacks, and the Mind Charge buff. Upon completion of the Fortune Social Link, Naoto's Persona will evolve to Yamato-Takeru, which gives Naoto immunity to Dark and Light, as well as a resistance to Fire.
Persona 4 Golden
In Persona 4 Golden, Sukuna-Hikona's skill progression line changes to allow Naoto to perform the role of an all-rounder. Persona 4 Golden's added bike rides and skills gained from social links further exemplify this, as Naoto is now capable of accessing all four elemental affinities, regenerating SP passively, and buffing teammates.
In the added wintertime gameplay sections new to Persona 4 Golden, the Protagonist can speak to Naoto if the Fortune Social Link has been completed. This will cause Yamato-Takeru to evolve into Yamato-Sumeragi, Naoto's ultimate Persona. Yamato-Sumeragi provides Naoto with improved elemental affinities, as well as a new, unique skill.
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
Naoto appears as a playable character alongside the rest of the Investigation Team in Persona 4 Arena and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax. Unique in many ways, Naoto's game plan changes depending on the situation. Guns, traps, and powerful anti-airs help keep the opponent away when Naoto does not want them to be close, while powerful lunges and normal attacks allow Naoto to play offensively. Additionally, when fighting Naoto, a Fate gauge is placed innately on the opponent, which starts at 13 and goes down after certain attacks are used. Reducing the Fate gauge to zero will allow Naoto to utilize Hamaon and Mudoon, supers that instantly kill the opponent. Generally, Naoto is a strong character with tools to deal with many situations, though these strengths are offset by Naoto's meter dependence and resource management.
Move List
- Shield of Justice (B+C): Counter move with several follow-ups if Naoto is hit while performing it. A/B/C/D is a short range burst shot that knocks the opponent away and remove 3 Fate from the counter. →A/B/C/D is a horizontal projectile that knocks the opponent away. It removes 2 Fate on hit. ←A/B/C/D has Naoto perform a backdash.
- Double Fangs (↓↘→+A/B/): Naoto jumps forward and kicks twice. Both hits are head attribute moves, meaning they cannot be blocked while crouching. ↓↘→+A is the faster and less damaging variant of the move. It is also the version that has Naoto travel the least. ↓↘→+B is the slower and more damaging variant of the move. ↓↘→+A+B requires 25 meter and is identical to ↓↘→+B, but is much faster. Naoto is in Snipe stance after completing all variants of the move.
- Snipe (↓↙←+A/B): Naoto enters a stance in which movement and defensive mechanics are restricted. In exchange, Naoto can press A, B, or C to fire bullets in different directions, D to exit the stance, and →D to perform a special finisher. ↓↙←+A enters the stance in place. ↓↙←+B has Naoto do a cartwheel backwards before entering the stance. ↓↙←+A+B requires 25 meter, and has Naoto roll forwards before entering the stance.
- Snipe shots (A/B/C after ↓↙←+A/B): Each button fires the bullet in a different trajectory. A bullets go straight forward, B bullets are shot down but ricochet upwards, and C shots are fired diagonally upwards from Naoto. Naoto has a total of 5 bullets, and must wait for them to recharge before firing them again should they be expended. The fifth shot only will remove 1 Fate on hit. Additionally, Naoto can press A+B, B+C, or A+C respectively to perform SP versions of A bullets, B bullets, and C bullets respectively. Each bullet costs 25 meter to fire and take away 2 Fate on hit.
- Burst shot (→+D after ↓↙←+A/B): Move similar to the A/B/C/D follow-up to Naoto's Shield of Justice. This removes 1 Fate and can be done with no bullets. →C+D requires 25 meter, and is similar to the →A/B/C/D follow up to Shield of Justice. If the projectile hits, it will remove 2 Fate.
- Blight (↓↘→+C/D): Sukuna-Hikona travels upwards diagonally and deals damage. The ↓↘→+C version has Sukuna-Hikona travel from Naoto's position while the ↓↘→+C version has Sukuna-Hikona travel forwards before moving diagonally upwards. ↓↘→+C+D requires 25 meter and allows Naoto to act immediately upon Sukuna-Hikona appearing. All versions apply poison on hit.
- Hair-Trigger Megido (↓↙←+C/D): Naoto's traps. The C version places a red trap that will hover in the air. It removes 3 Fate on hit. The D version places a green trap that will fall to and stay on the ground. It removes 4 Fate on hit. Using ↓↙←+C+D requires 25 meter, and will place both traps at the same time, and Naoto can act almost immediately after inputting the move.
- Anti-S SP Pistol (↓↘→↓↘→+A/B): The first of Naoto's supers; requires 50 meter to use.. ↓↘→↓↘→+A will Silence the opponent on hit, preventing them from using Persona attacks or bursting for the duration of the ailment. ↓↘→↓↘→+B will remove 6 Fate, as well as inflict Fear onto the opponent, making all of Naoto's non-combo attacks to be Counter Hits and removing the opponent's ability to tech throws for the duration of the ailment. ↓↘→↓↘→+A+B costs 75 meter to use, but will perform both moves sequentially, starting with ↓↘→↓↘→+A. It applies Silence and Fear on hit and removes 6 Fate.
- Hamaon (↓↘→↓↘→+C): The first of Naoto's instant-kill supers; requires 50 meter to use. It will do nothing if the Fate counter is not 0. If it is, it will kill instantly. ↓↘→↓↘→+C hits the area in front of Naoto. ↓↘→↓↘→+C+D can be used if Naoto has 75 meter to make the move track the opponent.
- Mudoon (↓↘→↓↘→+D): The second of Naoto's instant-kill supers; requires 50 meter to use. It will do nothing if the Fate counter is not 0. If it is, it will kill instantly. ↓↘→↓↘→+D is Naoto's anti-air instant-kill super, as the move comes out in a straight line above Naoto and is unblockable while in the air. It will not hit grounded opponents. Additionally, there is no SP version.
- Raid (↓↙←↓↙←+A/B): Naoto's Awakened super, meaning that health must be below 30% and requires 50% meter to use. Naoto will begin walking forward after inputting the move, from which there are several follow-ups. There is also ↓↙←↓↙←+A+B, which costs 75 meter in place of 50 and has different properties.
- Shots (A/B after ↓↙←↓↙←+A/B): Naoto's main Raid follow-up. Three shots can be fired, though if the ↓↙←↓↙+A+B variant of Raid is used, five can be fired. A shots deal more damage but do not affect the Fate counter while B shots deal less damage but remove 2 Fate per shot.
- Critical Shot (C/D after ↓↙←↓↙←+A/B): Naoto performs a kick. The C version keeps Naoto's original direction while the D version reverses Naoto's direction. Critical Shot can be used any time during Raid.
- Judge of Hell (↓↓↓C+D): Naoto's Instant Kill; requires 100 meter. Naoto places unblockable targets onscreen, which last around 9 seconds before disappearing. The position the targets can be altered should →, ←, or no direction be held. If the opponent is hit by any of the targets, the move will activate properly, and the opponent will be killed instantly.

Notes
- ↑ Naoto turns 16 on April 27, 2011, which is after Persona 4 starts but before Naoto is met in-game. Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth and Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth take place during the events of Persona 4, so Naoto is the same age in those entries.
- ↑ Naoto would have turned 17 on April 27, 2012, before Persona 4 Arena which takes place in May 2012. Persona 4 Dancing takes place later that year, so Naoto would be the same age then.
- ↑ Persona x Detective Naoto is set one year after the end of Persona 4.[2] This places it some time in 2013, meaning that Naoto is either 17 if April 27th has not yet passed or 18 if it has.
