Sunday: Light and Shadow
The protagonist awakes to find himself floating in space, where the two Ticos congratulate him on beating Polaris. According to them, the protagonist was able to unite all three factions and Al Saiduq in killing Polaris and regressing the world.[1][a] Tico (M) informs the protagonist that everyone's memories will likely be lost in the next world, and the two wish him well before floating away. The protagonist then heads to the new world as the Void closes in behind him.
Tuesday: The Approaching Oblivion
Reuniting with Daichi, Io, and Tico
Just like the opening to the Septentrione campaign, the protagonist is shaken awake by Daichi Shijima. After some banter, Daichi brings up Nicaea, much to the protagonist's surprise. It is quickly made clear that only the protagonist remembers the events of the battle with the Septentriones. The protagonist once again downloads Nicaea, now in version 2.0. Tico recognizes the protagonist and comments that something "went wrong" in the previous world. Though the protagonist presses Tico for details, they assure the protagonist not to worry, asking him to make good use of Nicaea once more.[2]
As the protagonist tries to jog Daichi's memory, Io Nitta appears. The protagonist learns that in this world the three of them are already good friends who have known each other for a long time.[3] Io then mentions she has also downloaded Nicaea. The protagonist begins quizzing her on what she remembers as Daichi reveals concert tickets for the AiHina☆☆ (pronounced "AiHina Stars"), an idol group composed of past teammates Airi Ban and Hinako Kujo, who are performing at the Sky Tower. Ultimately, the three friends agree to head to the concert.
At the concert venue, the trio notes the presence of agents in yellow clothing and black helicopters, which the protagonist can identify as belonging to JP's. Airi and Hinako appear and the protagonist calls out to them, confusing them and Daichi. As the trio gets ready to watch the concert, they all receive a death video showing them getting crushed under rubble at the Sky Tower concert plaza. Soon after, a massive earthquake strikes. Laser beams from the sky strike the Sky Tower and concert plaza, causing the death video's events to be set into motion. Before dying, they see the source of the destruction: a massive, Septentrione-like monster floating in the sky.
Nicaea activates and the protagonist chooses to live.[b] Bai Suzhen comes forth, saving the party before initiating a contract battle, triggering Daichi and Io's memories of the Septentrione arc. The two quickly come to grips with their surroundings, defeating the demons and earning their contracts. Afterward, the trio notes their lack of power compared to their fight with Polaris and Al Saiduq's absence, deciding to try and reconnect with JP's. They also note similarities and differences between their current situation and the Septentrione invasion. At one point, the protagonist's body appears to flicker, but he brushes this aside.
Reuniting with Makoto, Airi, Hinako, and Otome
Eventually, the team reunites with Makoto Sako at Shiba Park, who regains her memories of the Septentrione invasion while talking with them. After a happy reunion, she explains that the new invaders are called the "Triangulum" and the monster that attacked earlier is called Denebola. Additionally, the earthquakes have been caused by the Void encroaching on the world once more and Al Saiduq has not made any contact with JP's to her knowledge. Io wonders if Al Saiduq spreading Nicaea to everyone instead of only giving it to the thirteen tamers means that he is unable to reach them directly for some reason.
Makoto continues, explaining that in this new world, the Sky Tower is Japan's primary shield and covers most of the country, hence why Denebola attacked it first.[4] Daichi brings up Yamato, and Makoto remarks that a Yamato Hotsuin does not exist in this world's JP's, though Fumi Kanno and Otome Yanagiya are still present. She schedules a meeting with the new chief of JP's for the group before being called on to help track Denebola. After she leaves, Daichi, Io, and the protagonist decide to reunite with Otome, Airi, and Hinako.
Airi and Hinako are found holding an impromptu concert at Sensouji before app abusers show up. After talking with the party, the two regain their memories and the reunited party defeats the app abusers. After the battle, Airi and Hinako are caught up on events. They promise to rejoin the party and leave to gather their belongings.
Otome is found at Miyashita Park attending to victims of the demon attacks. The party expresses their disbelief at Al Saiduq distributing Nicaea freely to the public before speaking with Otome, triggering her memories of the past invasion. The two parties swap info, and Otome explains that the new chief of JP's is named Miyako Hotsuin, a name that never existed in the previous world. The protagonist can then propose that the new world is following a different history where Yamato never existed. Otome is called away to assist with the relief effort after promising to stay in touch, leaving the trio to wonder at Miyako's connection to Yamato.
Afterwards, Hinako and Airi officially rejoin the party. The group discusses the trigger for regaining memories, speculating that there are two conditions: to prove one's desire to live by contracting with Nicaea and then to run into the protagonist, whose memories seem to be an outlier to the world's regression.
Vs Denebola
As the party searches for Denebola, it appears above the Sky Tower after another earthquake. Makoto, who has now hooked the party's phones up to the JP's network, calls the protagonist, explaining that if the party can locate Denebola's main body perched somewhere at the top of the Sky Tower, they will stop it for good.
The team incapacitates Denebola's main body, causing the main gun to disintegrate. But before they can kill it, Miyako Hotsuin appears and commands them to stand down, using the Dragon Stream to capture the weakened Triangulum. Miyako thanks the party for their work before departing, leaving the party wondering about Yamato's whereabouts as Makoto, who has finally caught up with the group, brings them to the JP's Tokyo branch.
Meeting Miyako
After arriving, the party remarks that the branch has undergone slight changes from the previous world. After meeting Miyako, Io and Daichi explain everything they know to her, including having undergone a world regression, knowledge of the Dragon Stream, and the Administrative system. Miyako accepts all of this information at face value, much to Daichi's surprise.
Miyako claims no Yamato Hotsuin exists in the history of the Hotsuin family. She also claims that she is not Yamato and that Al Saiduq likely exists in this world, based on stories passed down in the Hotsuin clan. Miyako then explains that the ongoing invasion is being led by the current Administrator, Arcturus, along with its two Swords, Denebola and Spica. Hinako mentions that the names of the Triangulum correspond to the stars that make up the Spring Triangle, similar to the Septentriones that made up the Big Dipper, and that Arcturus can be used as a pole star like Polaris. Miyako continues, confirming that, once again, traditional weaponry cannot harm this world's astral invaders. However, this time their goal is the annihilation of humanity, unlike the Septentriones that appeared to test mankind.
In return for cooperating with JP's, Miyako promises to protect the tamers' families, at Io's request; to help them find their remaining friends Ronaldo Kuriki, Jungo Torii, Keita Wakui, and Yuzuru "Joe" Akie; to lend them resources; and to try and find information on Al Saiduq and Yamato, an arrangement that the party happily accepts. She also mentions that Fumi Kanno is updating the terminal system in Osaka and that the terminals should be online by the next day before leaving. The characters continue to puzzle over Yamato's absence while discussing Miyako's willingness to believe them before going their separate ways for the night.
Before heading to bed, the protagonist and Tico discuss Al Saiduq, with them confirming that they do not know anything about Al Saiduq's whereabouts. The protagonist can choose to hear a summary of the day's events, after which he goes to sleep.
Wednesday: The Stars That Dimmed
The Dream
Wednesday begins with the player being shown a dream where everyone but Daichi and Yamato have died in some kind of battle. A gravely wounded Daichi names their enemy as Arcturus, lamenting that "he" was not present before dying. Yamato surveys the battlefield, strewn with the bodies of his fallen comrades, before collapsing from his own injuries, cursing the situation. Al Saiduq appears before him, claiming that his potential is not yet exhausted and that more can be done if Yamato wishes it. Yamato accepts, and the two float away from the battlefield before the dream ends and Daichi is shown waking up, screaming.
Meanwhile, Miyako enters the protagonist's room. The protagonist wakes up and she greets him, informing him that the search for the other tamers is in progress, the Hotsuin family has confirmed no one named Yamato ever existed in their ranks, and there are no leads on Al Saiduq.
Miyako also explains that one Triangulum will appear per day, and the protagonist can comment that the Septentriones also operated as such. Daichi and Io pop in, prompting Miyako to leave. The trio meets up with Airi and Hinako, quickly realizing that Airi, Hinako, Daichi, and Io all had the same vivid dream about dying last night, though the protagonist did not. They all recall Yamato being present in the dream, the protagonist being absent, and their assailant's name: Arcturus.
Reuniting with Joe, Jungo, Keita, and Ronaldo
After some time passes, Miyako calls the protagonist, informing him that the other four tamers have been found in Osaka and Nagoya and that the terminal system is online. She warns the protagonist not to engage with the Triangulum should he or his friends encounter them: since they are civilians, they should prioritize their safety. The team assembles and they decide to focus on reuniting with their friends.
Joe is found at Sakae's Centering Park, being chased by demons. After Joe drags Daichi away in a similar manner to how the team first met him in the Septentrione arc, Joe comments that he remembers seeing the party in a dream. Soon after, the protagonist triggers his memories of the Septentriones; together, they fend off the demons before bringing Joe up to speed. Though Joe alludes to the fact that his relationship with his girlfriend is better in this world, he decides to join the team despite the risks involved, stating that letting the world end would probably mean failing his girlfriend.
Jungo is found handing out food, specifically his handmade chawanmushi, at the Festival Gate in Osaka. Jungo recognizes the team as being from his dream before regaining his memories. As usual, the team brings him up to speed on events and they swap stories about their shared dream. Jungo informs the party that Keita was at the shelter, but left earlier. Jungo joins the team, and the party heads out to look for Keita (and Joe, if this event was done before Joe's).
After some time passes, Miyako informs the protagonist that Keita and Ronaldo have been found. She also mentions that Spica is made up of multiple bodies that have emerged around Japan, again warning the protagonist not to engage them and to focus on finding his friends. Joe comments on how the situation reminds him of Megrez, while Hinako proposes that Spica likely has five bodies since the star is actually a cluster of five smaller stars.[5] The team then set out to look for Ronaldo and Keita.
Keita is found at an ice-covered Bickman in Osaka, throwing punches at one of Spica's bodies. While they once again save Keita from falling down the Bickman stairs, he runs off after the Spica body before the protagonist can trigger his memories. The team chases after him to find the Spica body advancing towards the Tsutenkaku, which spurs them into action to protect the tower. They defeat the Spica body, after which Keita recognizes Hinako from his dream. Soon after, the protagonist restores Keita's memories and the party brings him up to speed. Keita decides to tag along with the party.
At the Nagoya TV Tower, the team finds JP's agents, local authorities, and Ronaldo cooperating to fend off a Spica body that is approaching the tower. Before the team can call out to Ronaldo, he leaves to assist civilians, leaving the party to defend the TV Tower. At this point, the player will likely have noticed that Spica's bodies learn to reflect whatever element the other bodies were killed by. After defeating another Spica body, Io mentions seeing the protagonist's body flickering at one point before dismissing it. Ronaldo reappears and recognizes the party from his dream, expressing happiness at seeing them alive and well. The protagonist triggers his memory, and after catching Ronaldo up on the situation so far, Ronaldo explains that he never quit the police force in this world and cannot join the team due to his responsibilities on the force. He advises the party to exercise caution towards Miyako before being called back to his duties.
Reuniting with Fumi
The team returns to the JP's Tokyo branch and runs into Makoto. They share that they were able to reunite with Keita, Jungo, Joe, and Ronaldo, though they killed four Spica bodies in the process. Makoto informs the team that Miyako will be back at around 1300, and the team disperses except for Daichi and Io. Io voices concerns over how the protagonist seemed to be flickering during the fight—it possibly foreshadows his absence in their dream about the battle with Arcturus—and she and Daichi urge the protagonist to check in with Otome. If the protagonist meets with Otome to get a full check-up, she will find nothing wrong, reassuring him to check in with her at any time should his symptoms return.
The team meets up with Miyako, who scolds them for confronting Spica before informing them that all five Spica bodies have been defeated. She continues to scold the party for disobeying her orders and then leaves, leaving the party confused as to why she is upset at them for helping to defeat a Triangulum when Yamato would have praised them.
The party eventually spots Fumi at the JP's branch and tries to follow her, but they are blocked by a door. Io brings back Operation Cardboard Box and is somehow able to secure a key card to open the door. The party continues after Fumi, and discovers an underground lab containing the defeated Denebola in a massive tank. Fumi then appears, muttering that she was ordered to eliminate any intruders. She initially recognizes the party from her dream but brushes it off. Before she can attack them, the protagonist triggers her memories at Daichi's insistence. Fumi expresses relief at seeing everyone again while urging them to leave. Before they go, they ask about the captive Denebola and Fumi explains it has been kept at this lab under Miyako's orders, though she does not know why.
The party regroups in a room at the JP's branch and discusses Miyako's motives for secretly keeping Denebola alive. The protagonist can then meet up with Fumi, Makoto, and Otome to discuss the lab. In these events, Makoto and Otome say they were unaware of Miyako doing such a thing. Makoto comments that Miyako puts the survival of the human race first to a potentially extreme extent, while Otome and Fumi remark that Miyako has a habit of taking on everything on her own. Fumi informs the protagonist of a second secret lab beneath the Sky Tower that not even she has been given clearance to before leaving to track down the code required for entry to said lab.
Vs Spica
The protagonist eventually receives a call from Makoto, informing him that Spica's main body has been spotted at Tokyo Bay. The protagonist exclaims that Miyako never mentioned a main body—upon hearing this, Makoto explains that the bodies that the protagonist's team defeated were just drones, while the main body was far offshore and is now making a beeline for the Sky Tower via the water. JP's has set up three lines of defense: three bridges between the bay and the Sky Tower, but the first line of defense has just fallen. Makoto urges the party to head to the Kachidoki Bridge, the last line of defense.
At the bridge, Makoto asks the party to unseal and negotiate with Aramisaki, an ancient sea goddess sealed nearby. After unsealing the goddess, Aramisaki comments on the protagonist's flickering problem and takes an interest in him, deciding to possess him. She promises to lend the protagonist her power at any time.
Not long after, Spica breaks past the second line of defense. Under Makoto's orders, the protagonist commands Aramisaki to make a barrier around the bridge. The barrier stops Spica in its tracks, and in response, it freezes the area around the bridge. The party proceeds to fight Spica, though during the battle the protagonist's flickering issue returns, occurring more often than before.
The party defeats Spica, but before they can land the killing blow, Miyako appears once again to capture the Triangulum. Aramisaki criticizes Miyako, and Miyako retaliates, defeating her in one blow. Miyako is once again upset that the party has gone against her orders, telling them that Spica would have been stopped before getting to the tower. She warns them once more not to disobey her orders before leaving. The party is again left confused as to why Miyako is so upset about them defeating Spica, though Keita proposes it is because Miyako never wanted to stop Spica—she likely wanted to capture it instead. Daichi, Io, and Joe express concern over the protagonist's flickering problem before receiving a call from Fumi, informing them that she has obtained the codes required to enter the secret lab under the Sky Tower, and the team agrees to check it out.
Under the Sky Tower
The party proceeds under the Sky Tower and finds Al Saiduq floating unconscious in some kind of device. Fumi comments that Al Saiduq is being kept in a near-sleep state, while Airi sees this as a betrayal by Miyako: she must know about Al Saiduq if he is being kept in a JP's facility. Miyako then appears, triggering a Dragon Stream-powered trap that paralyzes the party. Miyako says the party now knows too much and knocks them unconscious.
The protagonist wakes up handcuffed in a cell. Soon after, Otome breaks him out before going to help the others. The team reunites in a medical bay and wonders if Yamato is also being kept captive somewhere. Makoto appears with everyone's phones, and the group agrees that they can no longer trust JP's. They decide to defect while Makoto stays behind to keep tabs on Miyako's true intentions. The party takes the special train from Shinbashi to Nagoya, planning to place the blame for the jailbreak on Otome so Makoto can escape the blame.
After disembarking, the team finds themselves surrounded by JP's agents and are forced to fight their way through. Partway through the fight, Ronaldo appears and assists the team. After the fight, Ronaldo explains that he turned in his badge so he could help the party without being limited by his duties to the force. The team explains why they have defected, and Ronaldo proposes taking over the Nagoya branch like he once did in the past. Everyone agrees with the idea, as the branch has food, water, and shelter. A branch would also allow Fumi access to the JP's mainframe and Otome access to medical facilities so she can perform a comprehensive check-up on the protagonist. The team proceeds to the Nagoya branch, now joined by Ronaldo, and they successfully take it over. Fumi leaves to gather information and the team disperses, with Otome proposing that the protagonist spend the night in the infirmary so she can watch his condition.
At bedtime, while Otome prepares for the protagonist's medical examination, the protagonist can choose to hear a summary of the day's events from Tico as usual. Afterward, Otome runs a suite of tests on the protagonist before he falls asleep.
Thursday: Our Requiem
The Dream, Part Two
Thursday begins with a dream of Yamato addressing the group, though something seems to be corrupting it. Yamato claims that Arcturus, the last of the Triangulum, has appeared, and seeks to annihilate humanity. Yamato mentions something about the Akashic Record and corrupted data, but his words are unclear as the dream flickers and the scene fades out. Io wakes up with a scream and comments that Yamato mentioned the protagonist disappearing in this dream as well.
The protagonist wakes up in the examination room and Otome greets him. The two hear voices from outside and see Makoto surrounded by some members of the team. Makoto informs Otome and the protagonist that Miyako seemed to be catching on to Makoto double-crossing her, so she has defected from JP's for good. The team then asks Otome if she found anything wrong with the protagonist, but she says she cannot find anything wrong. Io shares her dream, and once again, everyone but the protagonist voices having seen the same dream.
Fumi shows up and shares that she may have found a way to save Al Saiduq and that JP's has been shoring up defenses at the Tokyo terminal. With Arcturus weighing heavily on their minds, the team decides to head to the Sky Tower to rescue Al Saiduq, who may know more about the protagonist's situation and their collective dreams.
Reuniting with Al Saiduq
After breaking through the Tokyo terminal and busting into the Sky Tower's underground lab, the party makes it to Al Saiduq. Fumi is able to wake him, and he asks how long the invasion has been going on. The team informs him it is the third day, and Al Saiduq urges the party to defeat Arcturus as soon as possible. The party tries to figure out a way to free him, but Al Saiduq tells them it is not possible, as the device he is held captive in was created by the Dragon Stream and cannot be destroyed. Makoto laments Yamato's absence, while Al Saiduq comments that Yamato would be able to break him free.
He warns the party that Miyako plans to sacrifice them to try and save the world. The protagonist asks about Yamato and Al Saiduq tells them that he is in the Akasha Stratum, somewhere outside of the world, explaining why Yamato seemed to have disappeared from the world's history. In truth, Yamato stayed behind in the Akasha Stratum due to a problem that arose after a battle with Arcturus, but before Al Saiduq can say more, he is zapped back into unconsciousness as an alarm blares. The team makes a run for it, promising to return and free him.
The team reconvenes and wonders if Miyako's plan to sacrifice them is related to why she has kept Al Saiduq and the Triangulum prisoner. Fumi and the protagonist piece together that the world must have undergone not just one, but two regressions, and the party's shared dreams are memories of the past world.[c] Io quickly realizes that this means the party may have lost to the Triangulum once before. Fumi posits that the shock of dying could have damaged their data in the Akashic Records, explaining why they cannot completely remember the previous world. The team decides to investigate the current state of events including the Akasha Stratum, how to reach Yamato, Arcturus, and Miyako's plan.
Arcturus Descends
The party reconvenes at Tokyo Station to exchange info. Makoto observes that getting to the Akasha Stratum in the first world required both the Dragon Stream and Al Saiduq's assistance, but neither is available to them at this time. Fumi shares that she was not able to find any information on Miyako's exact plans, but did notice that JP's has increased security at the Sky Tower for some reason. Though Otome has found no new information on the protagonist's condition, she recalls that his symptoms spiked during the battle with Spica, meaning it may be related to the Triangulum. Airi comments that the JP's agents are not actively pursuing the party, and Fumi determines this is likely because Miyako does not need them yet.
Suddenly, an earthquake hits and Arcturus descends, causing the protagonist's body to flicker more. The party tries to attack Arcturus, but their attacks have no effect. Arcturus debilitates the team and then prepares a massive fire attack that triggers the party's memories of the previous world and how they died. Before Arcturus can unleash its attack, Miyako appears and binds Arcturus with the Dragon Stream, saving them. She tells them she cannot restrain Arcturus for long, asking the team to flee. The main character begins to flicker again, and the party carves a path through the ensuing horde of demons to safety as Arcturus rains damage across the field. Once the protagonist and his friends flee, Arcturus breaks free of Miyako's bonds, and Miyako comments that the demon tamers are not meant to die here.
After escaping Arcturus, the team initially panics before collecting themselves, expressing concern and gratitude for Miyako's actions. Daichi mentions that he remembers them defeating Arcturus in the previous world, though he does not remember how. He only remembers Yamato and Saiduq being the last ones standing, causing Otome to wonder if they know Arcturus' weakness. The team rules out Miyako letting Al Saiduq go, and they cannot free him without Yamato, while Yamato is stuck in the Akasha Stratum, a location only attainable through Al Saiduq and the Dragon Stream.
Makoto shares the news that Miyako has been badly wounded, though she will luckily recover with time. Arcturus also seems to have shut down after Miyako retreated, coinciding with the Void beginning to spread even faster than before. According to Fumi's calculations, if nothing is done, all of Japan will be consumed within ten hours, and Makoto notes that Arcturus likely shut down to concentrate on spreading the Void. Again, Yamato and Al Saiduq seem to be the key to defeating Arcturus, but both remain out of grasp. The party laments the catch-22 they find themselves stuck in, deciding to research the Void, the terminal system, and Arcturus's state.
The Akasha Stratum
After some time passes, the party reconvenes. Ronaldo confirms that the spread of the Void is rapidly accelerating and Fumi happily informs the team that she has found a way to the Akasha Stratum. Apparently, Miyako has already retrofitted the Sky Tower's terminal to travel to the Akasha Stratum. Fumi has no idea why the terminal has already been upgraded, but the team celebrates her find and decides to jump on the opportunity. Everyone then receives a death video of Yamato, who appears to be fending off strange enemies alone in a digital-looking environment before being slashed by one and killed. The team heads straight for the terminal to save Yamato, encountering no resistance along the way. Though they find this strange, they press on to save their friend.
Yamato is found fending off the strange enemies from the death video, which appear to be immortal, and the party jumps in to help him. As the battle unfolds, it is clear that defeating the strange enemies seems to fix parts of the level that are glitching out. At one point, the stream of code Yamato is standing near can bug out, causing the protagonist to flicker. Yamato will use his next turn to repair the code before continuing to fight.
After the battle, Yamato in turn asks if Arcturus has been defeated, and the party explains the situation with Al Saiduq and Miyako Hotsuin. Yamato shakes his head at these complications and explains that he cannot leave the Akasha Stratum or else the protagonist will cease to exist. If the protagonist's code, which is damaged for some reason, is not continually mended, it will become fully corrupted and he will disappear forever, unable to be brought back through regression or any other means. Yamato says the Triangulum have been attacking the protagonist's data for the past two cycles, confirming the party's hypothesis that the world had been regressed twice. The protagonist asks him to recount what has happened since defeating Polaris.
Yamato explains that when Alcor took up the Heavenly Throne and regressed the world, the protagonist was not present in the new world. The Triangulum then appeared, to Yamato and Al Saiduq's surprise, and the team was able to defeat two of them. Unfortunately, Arcturus killed off the party one by one until only Yamato and Al Saiduq remained. The two were able to defeat Arcturus together, but at that point, the world was almost completely swallowed by the Void and everyone else was dead. Thus, they decided to regress the world a second time.
This time, Yamato planned to stay behind in the Astrolabe, a part of the Akasha Stratum used for manipulating data, to repair the protagonist's data in the Record. Meanwhile, Al Saiduq would guide the team in fighting against the Triangulum, though this did not occur due to Miyako's interference. Yamato cannot return because if he stops using the Astrolabe, Arcturus will be able to shut it down due to inactivity. No one can take his place because the Astrolabe cannot be operated by human hands: Yamato is only able to manipulate it slightly with the Dragon Stream.
The protagonist steps up and proposes that they just have to defeat Arcturus before he disappears. Yamato notes that they risk the protagonist disappearing permanently if they are unsuccessful—the safer option is to negotiate with Miyako. However, the protagonist insists on dragging Yamato out of the Astrolabe to fight Arcturus together, and Yamato is eventually convinced, agreeing to the plan because he trusts in the team's strength. As the strange enemies reactivate, the party rushes out and returns to Tokyo. Once they have escaped, the Astrolabe shuts down.
Vs Arcturus
The team busts into the lab under the Sky Tower where Al Saiduq once was to try and break him out, but he is no longer there. Yamato makes preparations to fight Arcturus without Al Saiduq's assistance, explaining that they need to use Shiki-Ouji to combat Arcturus's weakening effect. Makoto catches on and explains that Shiki-Ouji can take on curses in place of his master, an effect that will likely work for Arcturus's debilitating effect as well. The protagonist and friends head to Sengakuji to gain the demon's cooperation while Yamato works on his end of the countermeasure for Arcturus's abilities.
Once the protagonist obtains Shiki-Ouji's support, Yamato develops an app utilizing its abilities. While Arcturus's debilitating effect cannot be negated, the app allows for everyone but its user to be freed from the effect, though the user will then take on damage from Arcturus in place of their allies. The app also does not affect summoned demons. As the protagonist was the one who contracted with Shiki-Ouji, he will be the one taking hits for the team. Yamato leaves the option of when to use the app to the protagonist.
Upon returning to Tokyo Station, the party gets ready to confront the JP's agents in the area, but the agents are ordered to retreat and leave. Left to face Arcturus, the protagonist flickers, and the party renews their resolve before the fight begins.
In the fight, only Yamato is capable of dealing damage to Arcturus by using the Dragon Stream. Initially, the attack deals little damage, and Yamato remarks that in this world his command over the Dragon Stream is incredibly weak. After some time, Arcturus transforms and the protagonist begins to flicker more. As Arcturus prepares another attack, Miyako appears once again, trapping the enhanced Arcturus with the Dragon Stream. She lends Yamato some of her command over the Dragon Stream, allowing him to eventually bring Arcturus down.
However, before the final blow can be dealt to Arcturus, Miyako once again steps in and captures it. She then introduces herself to Yamato. The team criticizes Miyako for her plan to sacrifice them and how she has kept the Triangulum prisoner. They insist on destroying Arcturus so that the Astrolabe can be reopened, but Miyako claims that even if Arcturus is destroyed, the "Divine Order of the Universe" will not allow the Astrolabe to reactivate.[6] Joe calls out Miyako's knowledge about the Astrolabe, to which she says she will explain everything later and leaves. Yamato tells the party that they should retreat for now, despite the party's protests about Miyako avoiding all their questions.
Miyako's Ultimatum
Airi wonders if the protagonist's data is safe now, and Yamato recalls that when Arcturus stopped functioning, the protagonist stopped flickering as well. This means the protagonist will likely be fine, and the party decides to focus on unraveling Miyako's plans. However, the party quickly realizes that the spread of the Void has only slowed down slightly, rather than stopping completely. Fumi estimates that this gives them around one day before Japan will be consumed, and the team realizes that they technically have not destroyed the Triangulum, which may be the reason. Yamato notes that the Triangulum likely are not operational, so they should not be able to influence the Void. If they could influence the Void, then they would have been able to delete the protagonist's data by now as well. Yamato questions how Miyako knows that the Astrolabe will remain not operational after Arcturus's defeat and the party puzzle over how to reactivate it. They go their separate ways to digest the situation.
Eventually, the party receives a call from Miyako. She explains the reason the Astrolabe will not reactivate is because there is currently no rightful Administrator. Thus, her solution is to create a true Administrator who is friendly towards mankind. To do this, she plans to use Al Saiduq and the thirteen tamers, citing that a true Administrator requires Swords and the thirteen tamers: for the former, Miyako has kept the Triangulum captive so that she can make them into Swords, and for the latter, she says she plans to use the thirteen tamers to make Al Saiduq into a legitimate Administrator through a device that will put them into a near-death state forever. Yamato realizes that the reason why Miyako needs all thirteen of them is that each of them holds a piece of Administrative Authority. Miyako says she will also sacrifice herself, as her existence is unnatural since Yamato has returned and this may cause the Astrolabe to remain offline. Io is upset at this news, though this only amuses Miyako. She says she will wait for the team's response tomorrow morning and ends her transmission, leaving the party to disperse and digest the news.
At bedtime, the protagonist can choose to hear a summary of the day's events from Tico as usual before going to sleep.
(Optional) Astrolabe
At some point before bedtime and after speaking with Miyako, the protagonist can choose to go with Hinako and Airi to ask Yamato about the Astrolabe and Administrative Authority. Yamato explains that all rightful administrators hold Administrative Authority, and though Al Saiduq was meant to inherit Polaris's Authority, he instead divided it among the thirteen tamers.
Because Al Saiduq is a Sword, he is bound by the Laws of the Administrators. Namely, if another Administrator appeared, Al Saiduq would be forced as a Sword to transfer his Authority to this new Administrator. This would allow the next Administrator to do with humanity as they pleased, resulting in the potential annihilation of humanity or a repeat of the events with Polaris. Humans are not part of the control system of the Akashic Record, so granting Authority to the thirteen tamers meant that no future Administrator would be able to automatically obtain Administrative Authority.[7] The reason why the tamers cannot return their authority to Al Saiduq normally is because they cannot use the Astrolabe right now.[8] Airi speculates that this is likely why Miyako helped the thirteen tamers find each other again, and Yamato wonders if Miyako willingly spread Nicaea to increase the odds of everyone recovering their memories and reuniting.
The four begin to discuss the Astrolabe. Yamato explains that only non-humans, like Administrators or Swords, can make full use of its powers. One must meet three requirements to use the Astrolabe: full Administrative Authority, a non-human to control it, and that the Astrolabe itself is active. The first condition can be fulfilled by having all thirteen tamers assembled and the second with Al Saiduq, but the team needs to figure out how to get Al Saiduq back and how to reactivate the Astrolabe. Until then, they possess no way to regress the world.
Friday: The Will of Men
Makoto knocks on the protagonist's door and informs him to head down to the command room where the others are waiting. There, the team voices their thoughts on Miyako's plan before Miyako's transmission arrives.
Accepting Miyako's Plan (Bad End)
The protagonist can choose to agree to Miyako's plan, to Yamato's disappointment. At a massive facility, a captive Al Saiduq wonders if there truly was no other way, and Miyako remains silent before welcoming the thirteen tamers and thanking them for their sacrifice. Each member of the party makes a brief comment before stepping into the machine beneath Al Saiduq. Once everyone else has entered the machine, Miyako thanks the protagonist for their wisdom and he steps into the machine as well. Miyako activates the device and asks Alcor to make good use of their sacrifice. Alcor promises to do so, pondering the team's decision as the screen fades to black.
A scene of Shibuya Crossing is shown, and everything seems peaceful as civilians mull about. In the skies above, Al Saiduq laments the loss of the potential carried by his friends, though he vows to watch over the world they saved for as long as he continues to exist. Afterward, a scene of Tokyo is shown, its blue skies transitioning to scenes of rubble and devastation. The Void is then shown devouring the sky before a 404 error message appears on the screen, and the player is booted back to the title screen.
Rejecting Miyako's Plan
The protagonist rejects Miyako's plan, and Io chimes in, saying that they will find a solution that will save everyone. Miyako remarks that negotiations have broken down and declares war on the party. Yamato proposes heading to Mt. Fuji to perform a ritual to amplify his abilities, so he can counter Miyako. Fumi sets off to grab the terminal code for Mt. Fuji, and everyone disperses to prepare for the upcoming fight while also searching for alternatives to Miyako's plan.
After some time passes, Fumi informs the team that she has acquired the terminal code for Mt. Fuji. The party heads to the Planetarium to access the terminal, but they are ambushed by JP's agents. Ronaldo, Keita, Makoto, and Daichi offer to act as a diversion while the rest of the party heads for the terminal. After some time, the party regroups at the terminal, except for Daichi who was captured. Yamato prioritizes reclaiming the Dragon Stream and the team heads to the crater of Mt. Fuji. The crater is crawling with demons, though some appear to be fighting each other. Makoto points out that some demons appear to be guarding the terminals to release the stake, likely under Miyako's orders.
Once the guardian demons are defeated and all four consoles are activated simultaneously, the Dragon Stream is released and Yamato performs the ritual. He remarks that he should now be on equal footing with Miyako. Soon after, Miyako calls them, informing them that she is holding Daichi hostage and to meet her at the Sky Tower at noon, or else Daichi's safety will be in jeopardy. The team decides to prepare for the battle. At some point before the fight, Io and the protagonist agree that even if they need to fight Miyako, they still want to befriend her.
(Optional) World Creation
If the protagonist has spoken to Yamato about the Astrolabe with Hinako and Airi, he can talk to Yamato about the Astrolabe's potential. Yamato claims that with full control over the Astrolabe, there are nearly infinite possibilities. Yamato names a few of the Astrolabe's capabilities to try and illustrate its potential, such as:
- World regression, which returns the world to a previous state. This is what the party has done twice already.
- World modification, or rewriting the psyche and social conscience of all living beings. This is how Yamato and Ronaldo achieve their endings in the Septentrione arc.
- World creation, which creates an entirely new and separate world: one with no memory of the past, with Yamato equating it to a "primeval" world.[9]
- Most notably, such a world would be free of the Akashic Record's influence, meaning no threat of invasions or Administrators deciding to test or eradicate humanity.[10] However, there would be no guarantees that humanity could survive in such a world to begin with, and use of the Astrolabe would be lost forever.
- This was the original plan Al Saiduq had after slaying Polaris, but due to certain risks with this option, Yamato forbade Al Saiduq from doing it.[11]
Yamato tells the protagonist to seek him out again if he wants to learn more about Administrative Authority.
(Optional) Authoritative Power
If the protagonist has talked to Yamato about world creation, he can then discuss Administrative Authority with Yamato. Yamato explains that if all thirteen tamers were to die, their Authority would pass to the next Administrator—either Arcturus, if Arcturus was still active, or Er Rai, who is next in line. It would not pass to Al Saiduq, and Administrative Authority would be lost to mankind forever.[12] In the event someone were about die, it would be possible to recover their Administrative Authority from them via the Astrolabe and redistribute it to another human.[13] This was the initial plan after defeating Polaris: to have Alcor continue to redistribute Administrative Authority to others he deemed worthy once the thirteen tamers began to reach the ends of their natural lifespans.
Finally, Administrative Authority allows one to reflect their will upon the world—this is the "potential" of humanity, though Yamato only learned of this recently.[14] This is why certain character relationships and histories have changed since the Septentrione campaign, such as the protagonist, Io, and Daichi being childhood friends, Joe's improved relationship with his girlfriend after his regrets in the first world, and Airi and Hinako forming an idol group together.
Confronting Miyako
At noon, the team confronts Miyako at a massive lab beneath the Sky Tower, different from the small one Al Saiduq was first imprisoned in. There, they find Miyako with JP's personnel and Daichi, who is tied up. The team sees the Triangulum stored in massive tanks, along with Al Saiduq held captive at the very end of the room. Miyako cuts Daichi's bonds, and he runs back to the party. The two sides begin to argue before realizing neither will budge unless they are made to kneel through force. Miyako tries to use the Dragon Stream to retrain the party, but Yamato counters her, neutralizing her attack. Yamato tells the team he can likely disable the machine holding Al Saiduq captive since it uses the Dragon Stream, and the party begin their assault to free their friend.
If Miyako is defeated, or if Yamato gets to the machine holding Al Saiduq captive, the battle ends. Al Saiduq breaks free and Miyako orders the JP's agents to stand down and to leave. Once they have all left, Miyako begins to glow blue before transforming into her true form, Cor Caroli. Yamato questions what an inhuman being has to gain from creating a new Administrator, and she responds that her goal has always been to save mankind. She vows to protect humanity as a human and the head of the Hotsuin family, summoning demons to the field.
When the battle begins, Cor Caroli attempts to unleash an attack, though it is negated by Al Saiduq, damaging him in the process. He will continue to negate Cor Caroli's field attack at the start of his turn, taking damage each time. The party can heal him if needed with spells while going after Cor Caroli. Upon defeating Cor Caroli, she reverts to her human form and accepts defeat.
Miyako asks for the party to execute her, as she has failed in her duty and is not even human. The party refuses, voicing gratitude for her help in repelling the Triangulum and her devotion towards humanity, regardless of whether she is human or not. However, Miyako wonders if her wish to protect humanity is her own or one that was programmed into her. She questions if she has any right to be their friend, naming Canopus as her creator. Al Saiduq explains that, according to Miyako, Canopus is a being that controls the Akashic Record and oversees the Administrators as a whole, searching for potential errors and correcting them, thus preventing paradoxes from occurring in the world. Yamato surmises that Canopus must be the one spreading the Void and the one who shut down the Astrolabe, and Miyako confirms this. The protagonist proposes bringing the fight to Canopus, but Miyako explains that he is on a completely different scale compared to the Administrators.[15] Though the party has no means of fighting Canopus at the time being, they swear to find a way to deal with him. Miyako agrees to join the party, deciding to wager on the party's potential.
The Divine Order of the Universe
The team assembles at JP's Tokyo branch to discuss Canopus. Generally, an Administrator is tasked with remedying errors in a world using the Astrolabe, but if an error is too large to be solved by an Administrator, Miyako explains that is when Canopus gets involved.[16] Canopus first awoke because Al Saiduq regressed the world even though he was not a true Administrator.[17] As this goes against the System, Canopus attempted to attack Al Saiduq when he began the regression, but the protagonist shielded him from Canopus' attack, granting him enough time to complete the process. This explains why, out of the thirteen tamers, only the protagonist's data was damaged.[d] Al Saiduq admits he did not fully understand what had happened to the protagonist at the time, as he was not aware of Canopus' existence back then. Since Al Saiduq stopped manipulating the Akashic Record soon after, Canopus stopped targeting him. Canpous then noticed that there was no rightful Administrator. So he created Arcturus, along with Spica and Denebola to serve as its swords. Seeing that all errors were mended, he went back to sleep. This explains why Arcturus seemingly skipped ahead of Er Rai in challenging the Heavenly Throne.
Al Saiduq was able to complete the second regression before Canopus could attack him. Unfortunately, the Triangulum were still brought back due to Al Saiduq's illegitimacy, and Canopus began to shut down the Astrolabe to safeguard the system against further unauthorized regressions.[e] Yamato's absence was perceived as an error and Miyako Hotsuin was created to fill in for Yamato.[18][f] Because Miyako was created by Canopus, she possesses both human and non-human traits.[19] After fixing these errors, Canopus shut down once more.
This time, because the party has defeated Arcturus again, along with Polaris before, Canopus has shifted his perception of humanity and now views them as an error in the system.[20] When Arcturus was defeated, Canopus woke up to keep the Astrolabe offline and to continue spreading the Void, which will envelop the world before Saturday morning arrives.
Yamato summarizes, naming two threats: Canopus and the other Administrators. Canopus is the immediate threat—if the party can stop him, the spread of the Void should halt and the Astrolabe will reactivate. The team will also need to figure out a way to deal with the many Administrators and their Swords who may decide to invade in the future. As for Canopus, Miyako claims he exists on a different plane than the Akasha Stratum and is beyond death, meaning he cannot be killed.[21] Fumi is reminded of the strange creatures that were attacking Yamato, and Miyako identifies them as Shards of Canopus.
Miyako continues, explaining that Canopus is made up of four Prime Factors: Heat, Gravity, Space, and Time.[22] Since Canopus is made of the Factors that govern the world, he can negate any attack and destroy anything that tries to attack him.[23] So, the only way to oppose Canopus would be to gain dominance over one of the four Factors he controls.
Miyako promises to find a way to reach Canopus through the modified Sky Tower terminal and asks the others to find a way to defeat Canopus. Al Saiduq decides to assist Miyako in modding the terminal, and Yamato dismisses the group.
(Optional) Path to a New World - Yamato's Perspective
If the protagonist has spoken with Yamato about the Astrolabe, world creation, and Administrative Authority, he can choose to talk with Yamato and Miyako about the issue of the endless administrator invasions. If the protagonist proposes creating a new, modern world by distributing Administrative Authority to all of humanity, Yamato will consider the possibility of creating a new world.
Al Saiduq's Perspective
The protagonist discusses an ideal Administrator with Al Saiduq, proposing a path where a human takes the Heavenly Throne by using the Astrolabe to grant them everyone's Administrative Authority and Miyako's device to refurbish the Triangulum into their swords. Al Saiduq is left to ponder this possibility.
Ronaldo's Perspective
The protagonist discusses the possibility of fighting every single Administrator with Ronaldo, potentially abusing the Astrolabe's ability to regress the world to create a near-eternal conflict where, ultimately, no civilian lives are lost as the thirteen tamers do battle with a near-infinite number of Administrators until there are none left to subjugate humanity. The protagonist points out that if all thirteen tamers with Authority die, it would all be in vain, as their Authority would not be able to be reclaimed. Ronaldo agrees that the risks are high, but such a route would allow humanity to retain control over the Astrolabe, and he leaves to give the idea more thought.
Ray of Hope
At around 18:30, Yamato will call the protagonist, informing him that Shards of Canopus have been sighted near the Metropolitan Government Plaza. The protagonist finds civilians being chased by demons, and Shards of Canopus appear soon after. The rest of the party arrives, though once the Shards see Yamato and Miyako, they turn red, shake, and begin to move erratically.
As the team works to protect the civilians, they discover that the red Canopus Shards can be killed. After routing their foes, the protagonist can suggest that Yamato and Miyako were the reason why the Shards began to act strangely. Fumi agrees, equating Miyako and Yamato's combined existence to an anomaly or paradox that Canopus is unable to parse, and the party celebrates having found a way to harm Canopus. However, they still must deal with the four Factors he controls.
The protagonist can propose stealing the Prime Factors, and Yamato cites the demon summoning app's Skill Crack function, which allows them to take an enemy's ability for their own. This could theoretically enable the party to take the four Factors from Canopus and turn them against him. Al Saiduq agrees that it may work, but he will need to expand the Skill Crack function first. The team's morale is reinvigorated, and they set out to finalize their preparations for the battle with Canopus.
Route Split
At 23:00, the modifications to the terminal are completed, and Ronaldo and Al Saiduq will propose their solutions to dealing with the myriad Administrators coming for the throne. If the protagonist has talked with Yamato about creating a new, modern world by distributing Administrative Authority to all of humankind, Yamato and Miyako will propose this solution.[g]
The protagonist is then tasked with choosing one of these three solutions. Unlike the Septentrione arc, because everyone has allied with the protagonist in this reality, they all voice full faith in his decision. Al Saiduq leaves to continue work on the modifications to the Skill Crack function, and the team resumes preparing for the fight with Canopus.
Last Day: Our Final Stand
The Final Battle
At 3:00, Al Saiduq finishes modifying the Skill Crack app. The team, now united under one cause, uses the upgraded terminal to teleport to Providence, where Canopus is. The party starts at a root-like structure somewhere on Canopus and confronts the factor of Heat. After successfully seizing it, the battlefield shifts, and the party confronts and steals the Factors of Time, Space, and Gravity.
With all four Factors under their command, the battlefield shifts once more and the party finds themselves before the core of Canopus. Using the four Factors, their demons, and the skills they have cultivated thus far, the team is eventually able to defeat Canopus.
Depending on the ending that the protagonist has chosen, different cutscenes will play out:
(Ending) Endless Battle
Al Saiduq goes to reactivate the Astrolabe before Ronaldo encourages the group that they will be able to win the eternal war that they are embarking on. The team grants Al Saiduq their Authority and the world is regressed once more.
The protagonist is once again shaken awake by Daichi after finishing an exam. Soon after, an earthquake hits, and the two receive a message from Nicaea, now in version 2.1 with a new logo, on their phones. Tico greets them, informing them that the fight has begun once more. Tico promises to stand by the team in the fights to come and bids them to have a nice day.
The protagonist's phone is seen in an empty void, flashing with a new message from Nicaea.
(Ending) Guardian
Al Saiduq greets the protagonist, who is floating alone in space, and tells him if he becomes the Administrator, he will never again be able to walk alongside humanity or share in their joys together. The protagonist agrees to these terms, and the screen transitions, showing the party unconscious around the enhanced Sky Tower terminal. Daichi wakes up and quickly realizes what is happening.
The protagonist stands in the chamber that once held Al Saiduq in the lab beneath the Sky Tower. Yamato sighs but ultimately respects the protagonist's wish to become the Administrator, promising to guide the human world as best he can in the protagonist's absence. Not long later, Daichi appears, begging them to stop. The protagonist remains resolute, and Daichi realizes there is nothing he can do and cries out in frustration. Miyako attempts to comfort him, telling him that she will serve the protagonist as one of his Swords. But before she can begin the process of becoming the protagonist's Sword, Al Saiduq shoves her aside and takes on the role himself, telling her to live as a human. He asks the protagonist to regress the world, and the screen fades to white.
Scenes of the regressed world are shown, which appears to be peaceful. Daichi and Io are shown having received the results of their entrance exams, with Daichi wistfully mentioning that he feels like he has forgotten something important before looking skyward.
In blue skies above a peaceful Tokyo, the protagonist and Al Saiduq are shown, smiling down on humanity, wearing matching versions of the protagonist's signature bunny-eared jacket.
(Ending) Record Breaker
Miyako and Alcor bid the team goodbye—because they are tied to the Administrator System, they cannot exist in a world where the System does not exist, to Daichi's shock. Yamato thanks Miyako, acknowledging her as a worthy head of the Hotsuin clan. He then calls Al Saiduq by name, thanking him for assisting humanity for so long and swearing that humanity will be able to continue without his guidance.
Al Saiduq and Miyako thank the team and wish them well. Al Saiduq then begins the process of creating a new world, prompting the team to float up one by one to the protagonist, voicing their thanks before granting Al Saiduq their Administrative Authority and leaving for the new world. After everyone has granted their Authority to Al Saiduq, the protagonist offers his, sharing a final farewell with Al Saiduq and Miyako before the screen goes white.
The scene shifts to showing scenes of the characters' lives in the new world. If the protagonist achieved Fate level 5 with Miyako and Al Saiduq before fighting Canopus, two additional scenes will play: one where Miyako bumps into Io, and another of the team, including Miyako, meeting up at a beach and spotting Al Saiduq clinging to a surfboard in the shallows. He walks towards the team and the game shows a shot of the beach before fading out.
Notes
- ↑ It is not possible to achieve this scenario in the Septentrione campaign.
- ↑ Like in the Septentrione arc, if the protagonist chooses to die, it is treated as a Game Over.
- ↑ This is also why Nicaea is in 2.0 rather than 1.0.
- ↑ This may also explain why the protagonist was one of the triggers for everyone to get their memories back, though it is never confirmed that this is the reason.
- ↑ Yamato's section was kept on because he was continuously using the Astrolabe to repair the protagonist's data.
- ↑ The likely reason for why the protagonist's absence was not treated as an error is because the protagonist's data was damaged by Canopus directly.
- ↑ Yamato may also need to be at level 5 Fate.
