This page details unused content in Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II.

Title Screen

A pre-release version of the title screen is shown in the December 1, 1989, issue of Family Computer Magazine (Issue 92).

Enemies

Bakuta has unused enemy data and cannot be encountered as an enemy through normal gameplay. However, using the Devil's Canned Food item can cause him to appear in battle.

Unused Overworld Tile Effects

Sleep

An unused overworld tile effect causes members of the party to fall asleep after walking across affected tiles. The effect displays the message:

アクマは ねむってしまった

Translation: (Demon) fell asleep.

The effect appears to be incomplete, as it always reports the status of the last demon in the party regardless of which party member actually falls asleep.

Strong Damage

An unused overworld tile effect causes the same strong damage effect found on certain tiles in some dungeons.

Events

Woman

An unused event features a woman with no dialogue. The event immediately ends after being displayed, and no flags are checked by the scene. The event uses the same music track as a Healing Spring. The graphics are unique to the room and event, though the character's intended function is unknown.

Dark Hero

This section contains spoilers. (Skip Section)

An unused event features the Dark Hero in a battle near the end of the game. In the scene, the Dark Hero states that Satan revived him and sends Azazel, Tiamat, and Belphegor to fight Hero's party before confronting them himself.

The scene appears to belong to an earlier version of the game's story. In the final game, the Dark Hero dies after fighting Bael and is reconciled with Hero, making his appearance as an enemy in the final dungeon inconsistent with the completed storyline. The unused event also occurs regardless of certain choices that can alter the story.

End of spoilers.

Early Suzuki Co. Ltd. Guard Sequence

The event involving the guard who allows access to the Suzuki Company building has an alternate early version preserved in the game's data. The event is largely complete and mostly identical to the final version, but contains several glitches.

The guard takes the Business Card as usual, but instead of warping Hero to the same location as in the final event, he sends him one tile north of the usual location. The guard's sprite also accompanies Hero and does not disappear until Hero moves.

The guard can behave incorrectly when Hero returns from the dungeon. In some circumstances, he does not transform into Belphegor after Ahura Mazda is recruited and instead sends Hero into the dungeon again.

The guard's presence inside the dungeon also causes graphical problems during the Satan battle. Part of Satan's sprite is used as the background, and when the background darkens at the beginning of the battle, only the portion of the sprite not used as the background remains visible.

Sprites

A pre-release version of Hero's overworld sprite is shown in a screenshot of Tokyo in the December 1, 1989, issue of Family Computer Magazine (Issue 92).
