Tun Kou is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Profile

Origin

Tunkou is a creature associated with Sichuanese folklore. It has a single eye and foot, with a large mouth, thus the name "tunkou" translating to "swallow-mouth".

Tunkou's function in Sichuanese culture is laden with varying interpretations. In one interpretation, Tunkou is said to be a monster that lures people into the water to eat them. Normally, it has a fierce look on its face. However, in Sichuan, among other places like Guizhou and Yunnan, it is common for models of Tunkou to be appended to people's doors, seeing it as a protector deity against evil spirits. According to locals, the spirit is that of one Lady Ma, the daughter of Prime Minister of King Zhou of Shang, and later wife of Jiang Ziya, the mythical author of the Six Secret Strategic Teachings. They experienced love at first sight, although married at old age due to Jiang Ziya's focus on cultivating the Dao and hoping to overthrow the Shang dynasty. Despite a promising love, the marriage suddenly fell apart, and Lady Ma died of anger. Jiang then dubbed Ma "Tunkou".
