Tokyo Abyss
Tokyo Abyss is a location and gamemode in Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2.
Overview
Tokyo Abyss is an Alter-World first-person dungeon. The player starts with only a sword and a shield Armament (Demonite is unused), and must build a team of Demons and collect upgrades to progress to lower floors and defeat enemies. The layout of Tokyo Abyss, including the contents of its rooms, is determined at the start of each month, and remains fixed for the entire month.
Combat in Tokyo Abyss follows the Alter-World system with some modifications:
- The protagonist has a level and a Backup Shield Bonus, which is one fifth (rounded down) of the highest shield stats from all owned shields.
- The protagonist can change their current sword mid-battle, which requires half of a Press Turn.
- Similarly to Aura Gates, the party does not recover HP between battles.
- Demons in the player's party are Awakened, Common, and have a level cap of 99.
- Items, Brands, Spirit Merge, Infusion and Sublimation are unavailable.
- The player acquires Stigmata, which grant passive boons to the party.
- If the player loses a battle, they may retry it.
Before first entering the month's Tokyo Abyss, the player is prompted to select a 1★ or 2★ summonable Demon from their Compendium, which will be the first Demon in their party. From the Tokyo Abyss menu, they can also change the protagonist's sword and shield, check their party, check the stats of the next boss Demon and restart from scratch.
Inside Tokyo Abyss, the player is given a full map of the current floor. Before advancing through it, they may change their Armaments. Once they take their first step, they will start moving automatically, only having control when approaching a split path, and they cannot move backwards. Floors contain several event rooms with varying effects. The player can also pause the current run to resume it later.
Rooms
Normal Battle rooms contain a battle. Winning any battle will grant experience, stat modifications for the protagonist, and a skill. All possible paths in a floor will have exactly one Normal Battle.
Boss Battle rooms are always at the end of a floor. In addition to the rewards from a Normal Battle, the player gains a Stigmata. The player is given the information on the boss of the next fifth floor (5F, 10F, 15F, and so on), and bosses before it may share some characteristics with it.
Demon Talk rooms contain a Demon. The player negotiates with the Demon, and may then choose to trade some of their HP for them to join. If the player already has three Demons, it must replace one in the party.
Demon Fusion rooms offer a Demon to the player, which they may choose to fuse with one of the Demons in their party. If the material Demon had skills transferred to them, the resulting Demon will inherit them if possible.
Conjunction rooms behave like Demon Fusion rooms, except the Fusion has a chance of generating a random Demon, including Demons that cannot normally be fused.
Skill Transfer rooms offer a selection of six skills, which the player may choose only one to transfer to the fifth or sixth slots of any of their Demons. This is different from the Transfers performed in Pandemonium, in that they cannot be used to level up existing skills.
Rare Skill Transfer rooms offer a Kasane Magatama of a random grade and five rare skills. They otherwise function like normal Skill Transfer rooms.
Heal rooms allow the player to fully heal and revive their party.
Rewards
At the end of the month, two sets of rewards are distributed to players that participated in Tokyo Abyss. The first reward is 15 Souls from the Demons in the player's final party. The second is a sum of Magnetite according to the deepest floor reached:
