Profile

Origin

Seth,[a] (lit. "placed" or "appointed") is a biblical patriarch in the Book of Genesis and Abrahamic traditions, born to Adam and Eve following the murder of Abel by their eldest son Cain. According to biblical chronology, Seth was born when Adam was 130 years old (or 230 in the Septuagint) as a divine replacement for Abel, and he lived to the age of 912, establishing the righteous genealogy through his son Enos that leads to Noah. In Jewish apocryphal literature, such as the Life of Adam and Eve, Seth travels with Eve to the gates of the Garden of Eden to seek the oil of the Tree of Mercy to heal his dying father, surviving an attack by a wild beast before being promised by the archangel Michael that the oil will be granted at the end of days. Seth is also recorded as the sole witness to Adam being carried into Paradise in a divine chariot.

Across extra-biblical traditions, Seth is revered as a figure of profound spiritual knowledge and divine favor. In Mandaeism, Seth (known as Šitil) is venerated as a major prophet and a righteous light-being, while esoteric Jewish traditions, including the Zohar, depict Seth as the recipient of secret teachings from Adam that formed the basis of Kabbalah. In Gnostic traditions, Seth is elevated to a divine savior and the spiritual progenitor of the "Seed of Seth," a lineage of gnosis-bearing souls sent to rescue humanity from the flawed demiurge Yaldabaoth.
