Profile

Origin

Cain,[a] (lit. "spear" or "acquired") is a major biblical figure in the Book of Genesis and a foundational narrative in Abrahamic religions. As the firstborn son of Adam and Eve, Cain was the first human born in recorded scripture, while his younger brother Abel was the first person to die. Cain worked as a tiller of the soil, whereas Abel was a keeper of sheep. When the brothers brought offerings to God, Abel presented the choice firstlings of his flock while Cain offered the produce of his harvest. God looked upon Abel's sacrifice with favor but rejected Cain's, stirring anger and resentment in Cain. Despite a warning from God that sin was crouching at his door, Cain lured Abel into a field and killed him, committing the first act of murder and fratricide in the biblical account.

When asked by God about his brother's whereabouts, Cain answered with the deflection, "Am I my brother's keeper?" As retribution, God cursed the ground so that it would no longer yield crops for Cain, condemning him to roam the Earth as a restless wanderer. Fearing that others would attempt to kill him in retaliation, Cain received a protective mark from God, often called the Mark of Cain, which carried a promise of sevenfold vengeance against anyone who harmed him. Cain then traveled east of Eden to settle in the Land of Nod, where he fathered Enoch and built the first city, naming it after his son. The account of Cain and Abel is also paralleled in Islam in the Quran,[1] where Cain is referred to as Kabil and Abel as Habil. In various apocryphal, Jewish, and Gnostic traditions, Cain is portrayed as the literal offspring of Eve and the archangel Samael or the serpent, making his lineage a source of earthly corruption, bloodshed, and demonic ties.
