Prologue

On December 24, 199X, Paku the Cupid hurriedly rushes out of the nursery at Harajuku Hospital, visiting the two newborn babies inside. Paku was ordered by the Angels of Tenkai to imbue one of the babies with angelic powers, but seems to have made a mistake. He runs into Hamil the Imp, fleeing after Hamil questions his business there. Entering the nursery, Hamil approaches one of the babies and gifts him the power of Devils. The devil-powered baby, Masaki Kuzuha, grows up to be an unruly and curious kid, while the angel-powered baby, Takaharu Ōgi, is more quiet and obedient to his parents. Nevertheless, both boys grow up together as close fiends.

The Dark Slumber

Ten years later, Masaki wakes up late, rushing to meet Takaharu outside his apartment. On the way, he crosses paths with Takaharu's sister Shō, then challenges his friend to a race. However, the Ōgi siblings' entrepreneur father appears and scolds Masaki, ordering Takaharu to take his company's car to Harajuku Elementary School. Masaki leaves the apartment building, finding a green-furred beast that he speculates escaped a laboratory. The beast watches over Masaki carefully, but as he tries to leave, he is stopped by a man who turns into Souta the Ratatoskr. The beast returns to Masaki's side and confronts Souta, spouting out words like "Devil Child" as he orders Masaki to get to class. Masaki refuses, to which he is handed a Deviliser and Vinecom before a battle ensues against Souta.

Afterwards, the beast introduces himself as Clay the Chimera, exclaiming he was sent to protect Masaki has his partner. He also reveals that his partner is a Devil Child, who wields extraordinary powers and can use the Deviliser to command Devils. More Devils aside from Ratatoskr are out to get Masaki, but in the meantime, they proceed to Harajuku Elementary. Unfortunately, Masaki shows up during sixth period and is forced to sit at the back of the classroom. The other students treat Clay like a pet, while an exhausted Masaki dozes off. At the end of the day, Takaharu asks Masaki to pick up Shō, since he will be attending a Student Council meeting. Masaki and Clay go to Harajuku Park to find Shō, who wandered near a subway construction site. On closer inspection, Devils are emerging from a mysterious haze in the ground. Midir ascends from the haze and attacks Masaki, but after being defeated by Clay, it casts the Dark Slumber on Shō. Clay remarks that no human can wake up from this curse, upon which some construction workers arrive and take Shō to the hospital. Once Masaki arrives, Takaharu regrettably tells him how almost everyone thinks he is responsible for Shō's condition.

With their friendship severed, Masaki leaves the hospital and is greeted by Zed Takajō. Zed invites the Devil Child to the realm of Makai, where he can find a cure for the Dark Slumber, and states there is a passage at the construction site. Reaching the underground tunnels, Masaki and Clay encounter Takaharu, accompanied by Ray the Phoenix who hails from Tenkai. Takaharu reveals that he is not a Devil Child like Masaki, but is actually an Angel Child. Paku briefly appears, only to run away angrily at the sight of the Devil Child. Team Masaki finds a subway in the site's depths, which suddenly begins to move under the control of Nike. Upon defeating Nike, the subway conveniently stops next to a Circle Gate that leads the pair to Earth Makai.

In Earth Makai, Masaki prepares to ask its queen Isis about the Dark Slumber. Team Takaharu stands near the entrance to her Pyramid, and is informed by Moloch that Isis is absent. Masaki explores the cave in Southern Field at Moloch's request, where he gets ambushed by Seth. He battles Seth and goes to Hinnom Town, watching a clumsy Metchi run and fall into a well. Masaki follows and discovers a tunnel to Isis's Pyramid, where Moloch awaits him. Moloch proclaims he will not let anyone get in Takaharu's way, though Masaki rebuts, declaring he just wants to save Shō. In reality, the Devil wants Takaharu to be the one who guides the world and humanity. Finally meeting Isis, Masaki is told that he can learn more about the Dark Slumber from Cécht, a herb-gatherer residing in Ice Makai. To get there, he and Takaharu must first pass through Wind Makai.
