Okamoto
Okamoto is a character in Shin Megami Tensei II.
Profile
Okamoto is a gladiator trainer who lives in Valhalla and owns a small gym. He has something of a gambling problem, as he is known for spending most of his savings on the casino and owes multiple debts to others. He also has a very noticable crush on the administrator of Valhalla, Madam, and frequently fantasizes about being able to meet her. When he was younger, he was a gladiator going by the name of "Killer Tsune"[1], and clashed with the gladiator Haneda, or "Feather Adonis" as he was known back then, with their rivalry continuing in present day through their opposing gyms.
He is always holding a cane and refers to himself as an old man, hinting that he at least is middle-aged. He is bald, and his face's most notable features are a pencil style mustache and a large scar that runs from his forehead to across his right eye, said eye being covered by an eye-patch. He wears a green coat, with his undershirt being a black leather zip up shirt. He wears two large belts and his pants and boots are also made up of black leather.
Game Appearances
Shin Megami Tensei II
Okamoto's voice is the first thing that greets the protagonist upon starting a new game. He demands that the protagonist, a man suffering from amnesia whom he named Hawk, awaken from his slumber and continue his training to prepare for the Gladiator tournament finals. He reminisces about how the two of them met; Okamoto had saved Hawk from a demon he had been fighting, but his remarkable fighting prowess deeply impressed the trainer, and so he took him under his wing, even paying for Hawk to go through a Virtual Battler that he went through unscathed, which earned him the high score. He exclaims that his luck is finally turning around and he won't let Haneda show him up any longer, then going right back to demanding Hawk keep training so that he can win the championship and the prestige that comes with it.
At the Colosseum, multiple statues of previous champions can be found, including one of Feather Adonis, where reading it's plaque will mention the deadly battle he had with Killer Tsune.
After Hawk successfully defeats his opponent, winning the championship, Okamoto uses the prize money along with his newfound fame to buy out Haneda's gym and pay out all of his debts. He sounds very enthusiastic to be able to spend more around town and in the casino, and dreamily wonders about the possibility to be able to meet Madam should Hawk continue to win tournaments, though he snaps out of it when he notices the look Hawk gives him. Before he can continue to celebrate however, Hiroko, a Holy Knight from the Center comes in requesting Hawk's help, and shortly after Hawk recieves an invitation to go visit Madam's mansion, though only one guest is allowed to accompany him, so Okamoto willingly lets Hiroko go instead. If the player visits the Colosseum after this, a worker will ask Hawk if Okamoto has given him a cut of the million macca prize money from winning the champipmship, and seeing as he has not, deduces that he just went to spend it all on the casino again.
After Hawk's true identity as Aleph is revealed and his exploits become more known, Okamoto's gym continues to gain even more popularity and traction.
Visionaries
Okamoto is featured in three Visionary cutscenes in the Game Boy Advance and iOS versions of the game.
In "Missing Twin Sword", which takes place during his days as Killer Tsune, Okamoto hypes himself up for his match against Feather Adonis the next day. He tells himself that he is the last hope for his gym, as his trainer is old, and there will be no more chances to raise up new and promising gladiators there should he fail. He briefly fantasizes about meeting Madam if he manages to become a champion, but snaps himself out of it and refocuses on his soon-to-be opponent. He says proceeds to call Feather Adonis words that the text censors and insults his way of speaking, but admits that his strength is genuine, so he tries to brainstorm ways of combatting him.
In "Victory Trophy", Okamoto says goodbye to a gladiator trainee who was done training for the day before returning to his office. There, he stands in front of a statue of Aleph, and begins to think about him, about how he became the champion because of his gym. Before Aleph, the gym was practically empty, and now it is overflowing with trainees. He even managed to install a new Virtual Battler, and admits hes thinking about hiring another trainer to better handle the amount of people clamouring to join the gym. He comments that he refuses to let weak people in, but that even with how many strong people join, there is no one like Aleph. He supposes that he will be unable to meet someone like him again, that could share the chemistry the two of them had, but before he can get further lost in thought, he notices the time and hurries off to the casino before it can close.
"Champion's Sunglasses" takes place in the same era as "Missing Twin Sword", and though not physically present, Okamoto, or Killer Tsune, is briefly mentioned by Feather Adonis. Feather Adonis recognizes that he is participating in the same tournament as himself, but writes him off arrogantly, telling himself that he will be defeated swiftly and without difficulty.
