The kraken[a] is a creature from Norwegian culture with strong ties to sailor superstitions. It is a a giant octopus-like creature that is said to attack ships and drag them down to the bottom of the ocean. It is likely that this creature was inspired by early sailors encountering a giant squid. It is first known from Christen Jensøn's 1646 Den Norske Dictionarium Eller Glosebog, which describes it as a jellyfish-like sea monster (Siøtrol) that attacks ships.[1]
