The right one is called Guhyapāda in Sanskrit and Misshaku Kongō in Japanese and has an open mouth representing the syllable a, symbolizing the beginning, while the left one is called Nārāyaṇa in Sanskrit and Naraen Kongō in Japanese and has a closed mouth representing the syllable un (from Sanskrit hūṃ), symbolizing the end. The two Niō are both manifestations of the bodhisattva Vajrapāni (known as Shūkongōshin in Japanese), a companion of the Buddha in Buddhist scripture.
