Profile
Origin
Heilong,[a] also known as Xuanlong[b] is recorded in the Chinese creation myth associated with Nuwa.[c] Before the creation of Earth, there was endless chaos: Undying infernos, endless floods, savage beasts eating man, and the state of the world was imbalanced. During the process of reconstructing the world, Nuwa killed Heilong to save the Jizhou region.[d][1] Later on, Heilong became regarded as the animal form of the Black Emperor[e] of the Five Regions' Highest Deities,[f] being equivalent to Xuanwu and thus representing the north, water, winter, and the planet Mercury. As a human, the Black Emperor was known as Zhuanwu.[g] According to Youxue Qionglin,[h] Heidi comes from the northern Chinese river deity Xuanming.[i] Thus, Heidi presides over the trigram 坎/埳 kǎn in Yijing doctrine, representing thunder and spring, and in Wuxing doctrine, 壬 rén and 癸 guǐ are applied, comprising water. Because water flourishes in winter, becoming snow, and its colour is considered black, this therefore brings about "Hei" Di, and thus "Hei" Long.[2]
A local legend associated with Longshan district in Jilin[j] is recounted in Li Daoyuan's[k] Commentary on the Water Classic.[l] In this tale, Heilong and Bailong appeared before Huang,[m] who approached them 200 steps and offered sacrifice. Following these rites, Heilong and Bailong crossed heads, undid themselves, and soared off. The majesty of these events led to the founding of Helong Palace[n] and Longxiang Shrine[o] in their honour.[3]
Heilong used to be associated with the water deity known as the Dragon King.[p] In this regard, Heilong represents the north direction, winter season, water, the dark sky, and the refinement of obsidian, lead, and mercury over 600 years. In this sense, Heilong is associated with Bailong, Qinglong, Chilong, and Huanglong.[4] These qualities were eventually adopted into Daoist and folk religion ritual practice.
