Profile

Origin

Chilong[a] is one of the five dragons of the ancient Chinese dragon king religion, along with Qinglong, Huanglong, Bailong, and Heilong.[1] Huainanzi mentions it giving birth to cinnabar over the course of 700 years through alchemy and being a source of lightning.[2]

Along with the other dragons, Chilong is a form of one of the Five Regions' Highest Deities,[b] in this case the Red Emperor, and thus a manifestation of Shangdi. The Red Emperor is often equated with the Flame Emperor Shennong,[c] but is also associated with figures such as Chi You.[3]
