In Persona 5, a capsule machine is present in Akihabara that can give various figurines of demons, costing ¥500 each. These figurines have no inherent function, but they can be traded to the "Covetous Man" next to the capsule machine for various items depending on the figurine's rarity. The Covetous Man will initially only seek a Mossy Mothman figurine, but after receiving one will trade for others as well. If the protagonist has multiple types of figurines, the Covetous Man will trade in order of rarity, prioritizing rarer figurines.
There are not consistent odds for the rarity of each figurine, as the odds themselves are randomized based on the prior roll, but a Decked Decarabia is guaranteed the first time the protagonist uses it.
Two capsule machines are present in Osaka, in the northern area of Shinsekai. They cost ¥500 per try. They can be used again if the area is reloaded (by traveling or loading a save). All of the obtainable items are only available from these machines, meaning they cannot be obtained after leaving Osaka.
Capsule machines are located throughout Tokyo, and the player can spend Yen to use one. Each set of machines has multiple figure series, and the player can spend either ¥600 for 1 capsule or ¥3000 for 5 capsules. Obtaining a new figure will reward the player with collection points, which are used to unlock Badges. New series are added to the game through content updates. Unwanted figures can be exchanged with friends or traded for random figures at the redemption shop. Each item's probability of being obtained is determined by its rarity; the probability of obtaining Rare and Super Rare figures can be increased by reading the book "The Fountain of Wisdom: The Mystery of Capsules."
