Origin

Billiken is a good luck charm created in 1908 by artist Florence Pretz, which she dubbed "the god of things as they ought to be". The name Billiken first appeared in a series of poems written by Sarah Hamilton Birchall with illustrations by Pretz; this version of Billiken was a fairy. Pretz herself claimed the Billiken appeared to her in her dreams. Billiken was modeled after Japanese deities, whom Pretz found to look "grumpy", and she wanted to make a god that brought joy to other people's lives. After becoming extremely popular in the United States and Canada, Billiken spread to Alaska and became a common subject to depict by Inuit artists, and would eventually spread to Japan. In her later life, Pretz denounced Billiken, claiming the god had turned on her and brought her nothing but misery.

  • While it does not use his Soul Hackers design, a Billiken statue can be found in Osaka in Persona 5 Strikers, closely resembling the real-life Billiken statue in Osaka's Shinsekai neighbourhood.
