Depending on whether Masakado's chosen hero was Law, Chaos or Neutral aligned, his path differs though ultimately integral to the Tokyo that follows. Akira was a little boy who lived in Tokyo with his older sister 25 years ago, when Demons suddenly invaded and attacked the city.[1] His sister was taken by the Angels as one of the innocent children chosen by God to be sent away to a new world, and was stored inside one of the Angels' Cocoons. Akira was spared from the selection. The ensuing fates of Akira and his sister ultimately became tied with the fate of Tokyo, splitting across implied parallel worlds.

If Tokyo's fate aligned with Law, the Cocoons left and Tokyo became utterly destroyed by an onslaught of ICBMs as part of God's Plan, turning it into a desert wasteland.[3] Akira in turn became a leader to the survivors. If Tokyo's fate aligned with Chaos, the Angels were defeated before the Cocoons could leave and God's Plan was prevented.[4][5] However, the children inside them could not be freed in time and had rotted away, including Akira's sister. In the ensuing chaos and infighting, Akira was among those who chose to become a Demonoid. Both of these Akiras are visited when the White sends Flynn, Walter, and Jonathan to their respective parallel worlds. The three Samurai help both parallel Akiras in order to gain access to their worlds' Yamato Perpetual Reactor needed to return to their own world. Each Akira confide their desire to create a new world of the opposing ideal as its leader and, in honor of the Samurai for their help, assert they will name their new worlds after the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado.

In the present world, Flynn's past incarnation chose to protect Tokyo from God's Plan by summoning Masakado, who became the Ceiling and shielded the city from the oncoming ICBMs. By then, the Cocoons had already left Tokyo and the young Akira was left with a strong resolve to save his sister. At some point, he had managed to obtain the Demon Summoning Program.[1] While at Shinjuku National Park, Akira met Fujiwara and told him of his desire to rescue his sister by going "above the ceiling".[1] The idea impressed Fujiwara and inspired him to band with the Counter-Demon Force in excavating a tunnel through the Ceiling to its surface. Akira had accompanied them at some undisclosed point.

When the Counter-Demon Force finally reached the Ceiling's surface, they were immediately attacked by the Angels in an effort to protect God's chosen. However, Akira had devised a plan to reunite God's chosen with the citizens of Tokyo by feigning an alliance with the Angels. Using his Demons, Akira drove back the other Counter-Demon Force members.[6] He left one of his Demons, the Minotaur, to guard the sealed tunnel depths in what would later become known as Naraku. Akira founded the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado above the Ceiling, becoming its first monarch as King Aquila.[7] He also founded the order of the Samurai to protect the kingdom as its first Samurai.[6]

In the Clipped Wings downloadable content, it is stated that King Aquila had also conspired with Mastema to seal away the four archangels' power at Kagome Tower. However, King Aquila was assassinated by an undisclosed assailant before he could enact his plan. This forced Mastema to rely on a hero from the future, Flynn, to complete their plans. The archangel Gabriel remained free, whose power was significantly diminished without her cohorts. The same downloadable content also mentions that Aeshma was another of Akira's Demons.

King Aquila's memory lives on through his recounted tales in the Obelisk Plaza and his giant statue over Aquila Plaza.

Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse

Akira appears in the dreams of Nanashi, who is revealed to be his reincarnation, allowing Nanashi to see the memories of his past life. It is revealed that rather than acting alone his plan to create the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado was co-ordinated with Fujiwara and Skins, with Akira manipulating the Angels above the firmament while the Fujiwara and Skins would found the Hunter Association to use the power of demons in Tokyo. Due to the secrecy of the plan, his actions were perceived as a betrayal and Akira was labeled a traitor to the Hunters Association and became a taboo subject among the organisation to the point that mentioning his name was avoided.[8]

It is revealed that Akira was assassinated thirteen years after the establishment of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado by the archangels in Sky Tower after they learnt of his plot with Mastema to seal them away.[9][10]
