King Aquila is a character mentioned in Shin Megami Tensei IV. He was the first king of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado and the founder of the Samurai.

Profile

As a character only briefly mentioned, very little is known about Aquila aside from what is recounted in the history of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado. His physical appearance is left unknown aside from his giant statue in Aquila Plaza, depicting him as a broad, muscular man. The Obelisk Plaza's epigraph also frames Aquila as a devout man who took to praying to God after the kingdom's founding.[1]

King Aquila is highly regarded by the people of Mikado. He is particularly revered by the Samurai, who hold his laws in high respect, so much so that Abbot Hugo's order to disregard the Samurai code is seen as breaking a taboo and sparks outrage.[2][3]

King Aquila was the first monarch of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado, having founded both the kingdom and the Samurai order 1,500 years ago in the first year of the Gregorian calendar.[1][4] The Obelisk Plaza's epigraph recounts some of King Aquila's history and achievements: In ancient times, when the land was shared between the Angels and God's chosen, the "Unclean Ones" emerged from the depths of Naraku below and attempted to invade the land.[5] The Unclean Ones were able to summon Demons and used them to wage war against the Angels. Aquila however, who could also summon Demons, chose to side with the Angels instead and together had driven the Unclean Ones back to whence they came.[6]

Aquila then sealed the gateway between Naraku and the land above,[7] and left the Minotaur to guard it as part of a pact.[4][8] Aquila's defense of the land marked him as the first Samurai and soon afterwards led to his founding of the Eastern Kingdom of Mikado. The depths of Naraku in turn became protected by the Samurai code, forbidding anyone from entering the Hall of the Minotaur.[2] Alongside the epigraph at the Obelisk Plaza, Aquila is also remembered by his giant stone statue in Aquila Plaza, which towers over the gated entrance to Naraku.
