Nine-Tailed Fox is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.
Profile
Origin
Jiuweihu,[a] known to the west as the nine-tailed fox, is a Chinese beast mentioned in the Classic of Mountains and Seas.[b][1][2] It is said to be a deity residing in the Korean peninsula,[3] 300 li east of Mt. Ji. Those living around it consume the five grains (rice, wheat, foxtail millet, proso millet, and soybeans), wear silk, and worship the Jiuweihu. It is said to mimic the cries of a child to lure in humans to eat; however, daring explorers would hunt it for its meat, for it was said to have antitoxin and spirit-repelling properties. It also has monarchical traits: Because Yu the Great allegedly met a nine-tailed fox and ascended the throne, it is said that meeting one is a sign one will do so themselves.[1]
Since its depiction in the Classic of Mountains and Seas, the nine-tailed fox has been derived and reinterpreted by numerous cultures, notably Japanese culture. Its legends influenced the development of the Xianli and Huxian.
Design
The Nine-Tailed Fox is designed based on traditional illustrations and descriptions of Jiuweihu, featuring nine tails and golden fur.
