Jester (Arcana)
The Jester (道化師, Dōkeshi) is an Arcana in Persona 4 Golden. It is an additional Arcana added in that version, not present in the original Persona 4's deck.
Profile
Unlike the other Arcana in Persona 4 Golden which come from the Tarot of Marseilles and Thoth tarot decks, the Jester is not named after an Arcana from a real tarot card deck. It is an alternate version of the Fool, as both share the number 0. In the Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Design Works, Atlus also labels it as The Fool.[1]

Adachi's Social Link added for Persona 4 Golden flesh out his character and backstory. His parents didn't care what he did as long as his grades were good, so all he did was study. He never learned how to cook and is currently single, but he wishes he had a cute girlfriend at home who cooked for him. The protagonist offers to cook for him instead, resulting in Adachi visiting the Dojima household several times and eating with the protagonist and Nanako.
The only other person who makes meals for Adachi is an older woman he runs into at Junes. She keeps pestering Adachi due to him having the same given name as her son and brings him a nimono with hard renkon. On his rank 6 event, the woman and her real son show up at Junes together, and he finds out that she keeps making him a nimono with hard renkon because that's what her real son likes. Adachi remarks that he looks nothing like her real son, and she could have used anyone as a placeholder; it didn't have to be him. The protagonist thinks Adachi will be lonely without the older woman, but Adachi responds that he prefers being alone. Admittedly, he is lonely but also thinks being alone is easier.
Completing his Social Link depends on the protagonist getting his Social Link to rank 6 by November 1st. Rank 7 and rank 8 will occur automatically.

Hunger (欲望, Yokubō) is an Arcana in Persona 4 Golden. To advance Adachi's Social Link while completing the game and pursuing a good ending, the protagonist must get him to rank 6 no later than November 1st, identify him as the culprit on December 5th, and then visit him alone on December 7th. Following their confrontation, the relationship between the protagonist and Adachi changes drastically, resulting in the Jester Arcana transforming into the Hunger Arcana and being renumbered from 0 to 11.
The Hunger Arcana comes from the Lust Arcana in Aleister Crowley's Thoth tarot deck. Numbered at 11, Lust is the Thoth version of Strength.

On December 7th, a new scene plays after the portal to Magatsu Inaba appears. Rise senses Adachi calling out to the protagonist, and Naoto expresses concern over the protagonist confronting Adachi alone due to their relationship. Should the protagonist go against their friends' wishes and see Adachi alone, Adachi will send another fake projection. Through it, Adachi expresses his annoyance at the protagonist for coming alone despite Adachi telling him to return with his friends.[2] During the conversation, the protagonist cannot get through to Adachi, and Adachi's Social Link arcana changes from Jester to Hunger.
After defeating Amenosagiri, Adachi tells the protagonist that despite having the same powers, they took very different paths. If he had been more like the protagonist, things might have gone differently for him. During the true ending, Adachi's letter continues after he talks about the Midnight Channel. He's been thinking about Dojima, Nanako, and the protagonist lately. He didn't find his interactions with the three of them fun, but now he looks at them differently. Adachi will also appear during the Social Link sequence in the final battle. After Izanami uses Thousand Curses, he makes fun of the protagonist for taking a little nap on the ground while he's paying for his crimes.[a] He encourages the protagonist to stand up and again emphasizes how different they are.
Adachi's Social Link also unlocks the new bad ending. On December 5th, the protagonist will reflect on their time with Adachi and be asked if they want to bring up his name. If the protagonist chooses to protect Adachi, the truth never comes to light, and time fast forwards to March 20th. The fog is still strong, and the fate of Inaba is unknown. But as with the other bad endings, Adachi never entered the TV, and there was no threat to replace reality by the end of 2011. The protagonist visits Adachi one final time before leaving Inaba. Adachi has the protagonist prove they're on his side by burning the second threatening letter sent to the Dojima house and destroying the only physical evidence that could have tied Adachi to the case. Adachi mockingly tells the protagonist that the truth is what people want it to be, and this is the truth the protagonist wants. After the usual sequence of the protagonist leaving on the train, there's a new animation of the protagonist spotting Adachi walking through the fog. This ending is called the Adachi Ending,[b] but is more commonly known by fans as the Accomplice Ending.[c]
Alternatively, if the protagonist gives Adachi an unfavorable response at any point and doesn't go through with burning the letter, then Adachi will say he was messing around, and the usual bad ending will play. Or, if the protagonist protects Adachi but doesn't visit him in March, then Adachi will call and let the protagonist know he has been transferred overseas. Dojima will remark that he and the protagonist must have been quite close. After, the usual bad ending will play.

- ↑ In the Japanese version of Persona 4 Golden, Adachi makes fun of the protagonist by using an infantile word for sleeping,[3] in line with how he uses age when talking down to the Investigation Team. In the English localization, the line was changed to Adachi asking how the protagonist could let a bitch like Izanami bring him down.[4]
- ↑ At Atlus's Persona 25th Anniversary Exhibit, the storyboards and stage direction for the scene called it the 足立エンディング (Adachi Ending).
- ↑ After burning the letter, Adachi calls the protagonist his 共犯者 (kyōhansha).[5] In the movie view, the animated clip of Adachi and the protagonist is also called 共犯者 (kyōhansha). This word is often translated as "accomplice" and is where the phrase Accomplice Ending comes from. In the English localization of the game, this word was localized as partner in Adachi's dialogue[6] and Conspirator in the movie viewer. Notably, partner is the same word that Yosuke calls the protagonist in the English localization of the game.[7] However, the original Japanese script did not intend to remind the player of Yosuke, as Yosuke's usage of partner comes from the word 相棒 (aibō) rather than 共犯者 (kyōhansha).[8]
