Banner is an unofficial term referring to a common mechanic featured in Gacha games.

Overview

Banners are sets of units with specific pull rates functioning as a lottery system for players to gamble on. Banners are often marketed around specific units and only available for a limited amount of time.

Generally, players will be able to perform microtransactions to obtain an in-game currency for use on Banners. In order to accommodate users, many gacha games feature a pity system that give players that have spent a predetermined amount of currency on Banners a guaranteed chance to obtain a featured unit.

Mechanics by Game

Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2

In Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2, Banners generally utilize Gems or Files as currency and are split into five categories: Time Limited, Superior, Normal, Fragment, and Extraction.

Time Limited

The Time Limited category contains a vast rotating roster of Banners that is updated around every 2 weeks. These Banners are often dedicated to gacha-exclusive units tied to specific in-game Events. Time Limited Banners generally fall under the following three categories: Gem Summons, Step-up Summons, and Tome Summons.

Gem Summon

Gem Summons are used to summon a random Rarity 3★ to 5★ demon. Time Limited Gem Summon Banners often feature higher drop rates for specific units. After use, the player may receive certain gifts depending on which Banner it is, what units the player obtained from it, and how many times the player used it, including Parchment, Tomes, or Transcend Motes. Gem Summons utilize the currency Gems.

Step-up Summon
Main article: Step-up Summon

Step-up Summons are a more structured version of Gem Summons, which features a slight price discount and a guaranteed chance to obtain higher Rarity units. These benefits come at the cost of a limited amount of uses and a higher barrier of entry, because unlike Gem Summons, Step-up Summons require the player to purchase multiple summons at once.

Tome Summon
Main article: Tome Summon

Tome Summons function as Shin Megami Tensei: Liberation Dx2's main pity system. When players purchase Summons in either Time Limited Gem Summons or Step-up Summons, they may receive Tomes tied to the unit(s) contained within the respective Banner. These Tomes can be exchanged at a Tome Summon to guarantee the Summon of a featured unit from the corresponding Banner.

Superior

The Banners available within the Superior Summon category are consistently active for prolonged periods of time and are not regularly updated. It features a variety of Banners with a wide assortment of in-game currencies largely focused on summoning random Rarity 3★ to 5★ demons with some exceptions.
