Saturnus is a Demon in the Megami Tensei franchise.

Origin

Saturnus, usually known as Saturn in English, is a Roman deity of agriculture. By no later than the 3rd century BC, Saturn was identified with the Greek Titan Cronus due to certain similarities, and Saturn came to adopt several aspects of Cronus, such as being the father of Jupiter (who was identified with Zeus) and being overthrown by him.

While Cronus was imprisoned by Zeus in Tartarus in the Greek tradition, according to Virgil's Aeneid, after Saturn's overthrow by Jupiter, he fled to Italy and became a ruler in Latium, presiding over the Golden Age,[1] which he compares with the reign of Caesar Augustus.[2] Latium was supposedly called as such because Saturn had hidden (latuisset) himself there, and he founded a city called Saturnia near a city founded by Janus.[1] However, most other authors preferred to keep the Golden Age before Saturn's overthrow as in the Greek tradition, though the other details of Virgil's account of Saturn were widely accepted.[3] Virgil also writes that the Latins are the people of Saturn who hold to the righteous customs of the ancient god.[4]

The festival of Saturnalia in December was dedicated to Saturn.

Design

Saturnus is a white and red humanoid with flames erupting from the opening on his abdomen, head and missing limbs, drawing from his title of "The Black Sun".[5]

Kazuma Kaneko Works VII says that Saturnus is designed as a candle, also mentioning a custom of Saturnalia to give candles to one another.[6]

A fertility god of Roman mythology, associated with the primordial earth. He is commonly identified with the Greek god Cronus. Often referred to as "Black Sun" by Chaldean astronomers, linked to the low position of the sun around the time of the winter solstice. Also known as the "Night Sun" and also the "King of Death" living in the depths of the underworld. It is said that people prayed to Saturnus, the winter sun, to call for a new spring, and that custom became what we now know as Christmas.

Kaneko Kazuma Dennō Akuma Zukan イタリアやローマで信仰される穀物の神。冬至の頃の太陽が神格化された存在で、「黒い太陽」または「夜の太陽」とも呼ばれる。ローマ人たちは、サトゥルヌスが冬の太陽の下降を食い止めてくれていると考え、冬至の頃になると春の豊穣を願うサトゥルヌナリアという祭りを行なった。この祭りが、現在のクリスマスの原形であるといわれている。
Translation: A god of grain venerated in Italy and Rome. He is the deified presence of the sun around the winter solstice, also known as the "Black Sun" or the "Sun of the Night". The Romans thought that Saturnus could halt the setting of the winter sun, and they celebrated a festival called Saturnalia around the winter solstice to pray for an abundant spring harvest. This festival is said to have been the original form of present-day Christmas.

Saturnus appears in Ueno Park seeking out his son Zeus, however instead he finds the Nahobino who he requests to kill Zeus out of a desire for revenge for usurping him as Kronos despite humanity reinterpreting him into a more benevolent god as Saturnus.

Trivia

  • A render for Saturnus exists within the files of Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, despite not being playable in the game.
  • Saturnus's compendium descriptions in the localizations of the Soul Hackers series and Persona series are rewritten compared to the Japanese versions, which do not mention the story of Saturn eating his children or being overthrown. The Japanese Soul Hackers description matches that of Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, while the Soul Hackers 2 and Persona compendium entries instead say he is also known as the Black Sun and that he is said to have demanded sacrifices in exchange for bountiful harvests.[7][8]
