Last Surprise is the main battle theme in Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal. It is composed by Shoji Meguro with lyrics by Benjamin Franklin and features vocals by Lyn Inaizumi. It is track 17 on disc 1 of the Persona 5 Original Soundtrack.

Game Appearances

Persona 5

"Last Surprise" plays during most standard battles inside of Palaces, including Mementos.

If certain costumes are worn by the Phantom Thieves in battle, a different music track will play during battles and during the results screen instead, such as the Gekkoukan High Uniform costumes causing "Mass Destruction" and "After the Battle" from Persona 3 to play.[1]

Persona 5 Royal

If a Shadow is approached without being seen and attacked using an ambush, "Take Over" will play instead of "Last Surprise."

Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight

"Last Surprise" is a playable track in Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight. In addition to the original song, the game also features two remixes of "Last Surprise," one by ☆Taku Takahashi and another by Jazztronik.

Persona 5 Strikers

Strikers features a remix titled "Last Surprise -Scramble-."

Persona 5: The Phantom X

A remix instrumental version titled "Last Surprise -spring festival-" plays during the Version 3.3.0 Chinese New Year event. The song was later released in Persona 5: The Phantom X: OST3 on the track number nine.

Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth

A remix of the song is featured as "Anime 01" in the Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth Original Soundtrack.

Trivia

  • This song leaned heavily in the direction of acid jazz because though battles are anything but normal, they are now the norm for the protagonists. Meguro particularly likes the organ glissando before the vocals kick in, and had been wanting to use that kind of sound for a while.[3]
  • A big-band rendition of the song arranged by Charlie Rosen and Jake Silverman, performed by The 8-Bit Big Band, and sung by Jonah Nilsson was nominated for a 2025 Grammy Award in the "Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals" category.[4] This unofficial arrangement was originally released as track 12 on The 8-Bit Big Band's fourth full-length album, Game Changer, in November 2023.[5]
