Biography
Career
As the leader of The 8-Bit Big Band, Charlie Rosen has arranged a wide selection of video game music in the big-band style. In the band's fourth and fifth albums, Rosen arranged the Persona 5 songs "Beneath the Mask," "Last Surprise," "No More What Ifs," and "Tokyo Daylight." Rosen and co-arranger Jake Silverman won the 2022 Grammy Award in the Best Arrangement, Instrumental Or A Cappella category for The 8-Bit Big Band's rendition of "Meta Knight's Revenge" from Kirby Super Star, making it the first video game remix and first Nintendo game track to win a Grammy. [1] [2] The two also co-arranged the band's "Last Surprise" remix, which was nominated for a 2025 Grammy Award in the Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals category.[3] In addition to his work on The 8-Bit Big Band, Rosen has won one Grammy Award and two Tony Awards for his orchestrations in the musicals Moulin Rouge! and Some Like It Hot.[4]
In 2025, Rosen worked with Atlus to compose and conduct the Persona 5 Special Big Band Concert alongside members of The 8-Bit Big Band; during the performances he also played the guitar and triangle. Rosen returned to conduct and perform the Persona 5 Big Band 2026 Asia Tour. His arrangements for the concerts received studio recordings for an album release, and the "Rivers in the Desert" arrangement was put into Persona 5: The Phantom X as the battle theme for an event. Since the first Persona 5 Big Band concert, he has worked with Sega to compose the score of the Sonic the Hedgehog Presents: The Chaotix Casefiles podcast, and partnered with The Pokémon Company to create and perform medleys for the opening ceremony of Pokémon Worlds 2026.
